Overview

It's 1953 in sunny Florida, and 15-year-old Lydia Isleworth thinks her ultimate life goal, like that of every woman she knows, is to marry a respectable man and raise a family. Then, she meets an aspiring Hollywood actress Marlena DiPluma, who says four life-changing words -- YOU CAN DO ANYTHING -- and gives her a journal to read. The journal, written by Ava, a defiant girl of Lydia's age, becomes the catalyst for Lydia's awakening and new life adventure. A story of parallel lives, Portion of the Sea follows two young women in passionate pursuit of their independence -- Lydia during the cultural revolution of the 1950s and 1960s, and Ava during the late-1800s when a few pioneering American ladies set the course for women's freedom. In this stirring follow-up to her debut novel Sanibel Scribbles, Christine Lemmon offers a trademark story of how women can inspire each other to pursue bold dreams, make courageous choices, and reclaim lost treasures.

Editorial Reviews

Midwest Book Review
Christine Lemmon is the author of a series of superbly written novels with the theme of women struggle to realize their true potential. "Sanibel Scribbles" (9780971287419, $14.95) is the story of Vicki Brightman, her best friend Rebecca, a six-month journey to another country, a roster of colorful characters, and the unexpected demands that compel equally unexpected changes in one's life. Set in 1953 era Florida, "Portion Of The Sea" (9780971287457, $14.95), is the complex story of 15-year-old Lydia Isleworth, who meets Marlena DiPluma, an aspiring Hollywood actress who give Lydia her journal and admonishes that Lydia is capable of accomplishing anything that she wants to achieve. "Sand In My Eyes" (9780971287471, $14.95) is the story of Anna Hott, who leaves her high-pressure life, failing marriage, and demanding children behind when she moves from New York City to Sanibel Island, a barrier island off of Florida's Gulf Coast where life is lived at a very different pace and enables her. Very highly recommended for community library contemporary fiction collections and personal leisure time reading lists, all three novels document Christine Lemmon as a gifted writer with a very special flare for creating memorable characters with extraordinary stories of their own.

Meet the Author

Christine Lemmon was born in Chicago, Illinois. When she was eight years old her family moved to Saugatuck, Michigan where together they worked their family businesses. Her schooling was in Holland, Michigan, where she also graduated from Hope College, a private, liberal arts college. She has lived all over the country writing for radio, newspaper, television and magazine.
She currently lives with her husband and three children on Sanibel Island, a subtropical island off Florida's Gulf Coast, which is the setting for her novels. She gets most of her inspiration while biking, kayaking or walking around the island, and watching sunsets with her family, but then she must hold her ideas until night, when her children are sleeping and she can write.
