Overview

James delved deeply into his characters' inner lives. In The Portrait of a Lady, the life of his enchanting heroine Isabel Archer is changed when her aunt, Mrs. Touchett, visits her after her father's death (her mother had died long before). Mrs. Touchett, an expatriate American living in Florence, invites Isabel to accompany her to Europe, where Isabel fascinates everyone by her beauty, intelligence, and vivacity. Mr. Touchett makes generous provision for her in his will, but this turns out to have unexpected and undesired consequences.

Yet another story about faulty human nature. Just like in the Great Gatsby, the story goes over a typical parasitic behavior of an average upper class woman, who believes that she is somewhat special just because she was born this way. Stories like this one honestly make me sick.
