Coming up screaming from the depths of Florida -- there being no scarier state in the union -- Marilyn Manson cannily positioned themselves as a goth-industrial hybrid on their debut album, Portrait of an American Family. At this stage in their evolution, Marilyn Manson was clearly a band, not just the project of Brian Warner, aka Mr. Manson, who would later simply adopt his band's name as his own. Also, horror-show schlock was a bigger factor than it would be later on, when he wanted to be the Antichrist Superstar for the world at large. In other words, it's Manson at his silliest, singing about "My Monkey" and "Snake Eyes and Sissies." Nevertheless, beneath all the camp shock there are signs of Warner's unerring eye for genuine outrage and musical talent, particularly on the trio of "Cake and Sodomy," "Lunchbox," and "Dope Hat."

I have been a Marilyn Manson fan since I was 10, but I haven't been able to get any of his albums. This is my first album and I think it is the best one yet!
This is the best album the Manson has written to this day. Antichrist superstar and mechanical animals come though. This is the beginning of Manson. It's his first album and his best.
Marilyn Manson is excellent. Approved. Alyson approved. Good CD. Excellent. Marilyn Manson is superior and I enjoy this album. You should buy it. :) hah haha
This was my first Manson cd because I like to start from first to last! Alot has change in his music in the past years. They are all good but this as to be the best!!!
I love this album. I could really leave this review at that but I just can't do that. I have been a Marilyn Manson fan since I was 12 - 7 years ago. Aesthetically this is one of my favorite albums. It has this almost amatuer feel to it that has always attracted me to it. I don't think this is my number one favorite but it is second only to Mechanical Animals (beautiful). If you like this then look around for some spooky kids stuff to hear demos of Dope Hat, Wrapped in Plastic, etc...
