What People Are Saying

Barbara H. Davis
Barbara H. Davis, assistant professor, College of Education, Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas

As a teacher educator, I have found Positive Discipline in the Classroom to be a powerful tool for helping novice teachers develop effective classroom management skills. The components of Positive Discipline provide beginning teachers (and veterans) with a framework for creating caring environments in which children share in the problem-solving and decision-making processes. I highly recommend it for teacher preparation and school district professional development programs.

Bill Scott
Bill Scott, Principal, Birney Elementary, Marietta, Georgia

Positive Discipline in the Classroom has brought back the joy of being an educator. The jargon-free concepts and strategies are easy to follow and have changed my life as a principal, as well as the lives of my teachers and students. We have all grown together to create a school climate in which everyone is treated with dignity and respect and in which students can learn the skills they need for success. Without question, Positive Discipline in the Classroom is a must for every educator.

Dina Emser
Dina Emser, M.A., former elementary school principal, educational consultant, personal and professional coach

I have seen Positive Discipline transform the way teachers view themselves and their students. By participating in the activities included in this book, it becomes obvious how learning shifts from head to heart, where positive change can really take root.

Jan Reed Forsse
Jan Reed Forsse, adjunct professor, Azusa Pacific University, Azusa, California

I encourage every student I teach to use Positive Discipline in the Classroom. Its approach is the key to creating a feeling of community in the classroom--a community in which students truly learn to respect and help each other by using class meetings and other communication and problem-solving skills.

Lonisa Browning
Lonisa Browning, first-grade teacher, Brookhollow Elementary, Pflugerville, Texas

Positive Discipline has influenced my class in ways that amaze me. My main goal for class meetings has been to provide students with the skills necessary to solve conflict, both in and out of the classroom. I have witnessed my children move from "Stop!" to "I value your friendship, and I don't want us to fight anymore. How can I help to solve this?"-thoughtful words for a first-grade child to say and understand. My class has developed into a community of friends who are there to lend helping hands or attentive ears to anyone in need.

Robert W. Reasoner
Robert W. Reasoner, president, International Council for Self-Esteem

This book should be standard operating procedure. I highly recommend it to anyone who seeks to teach young people!

S Miller
Shana Miller, third-year teacher, Olivet Community Schools, Michigan

I have used the Positive Discipline in the Classroom approach for three years. After using this program, I experienced so many successes that I cannot imagine what a classroom would be like without it.

Shannon Potter
Shannon Potter, fifth-grade teacher, Sheridan Elementary, Houston, Texas

As a first-year teacher, I used Positive Discipline in the Classroom as a guide for classroom management. Because this book so clearly explains each of the eight building blocks for successful meetings, I was easily able to implement classroom meetings with my students. They learned mutual respect and problem-solving skills, while I learned how to be an effective classroom manager.

    Thought Provoking and Enlightening

Positive Discipline in the Classroom is both thought provoking and enlightening. Throughout the book, all of the theories presented were supported by the authors' thinking and therefore allow the reader to make their own judgements. First, it brings the readers' attention to the importance of emotional intelligence and life skills, as well as, their support and development in the classroom. Then, it details the steps necessary in establishing effective classroom meetings which provide students the opportunity to develop and practice these important skills. Additionally, other positive discipline techniques which work in conjunction with the classroom meeting are described. Most importantly, the book forces the reader to think introspectively about many of the standard practices and behavior management techniques currently being used in classrooms around the country and their effectiveness. The thought of all that could be gained by utilizing classroom meetings and other positive discipline techniques to create a safe and caring community in the classroom for all students, particularly encouragement rather than praise and solutions in lieu of punishment, is quite provocative. The program seems too powerful to resist.
