Possum Kingdomby Lorelei Shannon
Robbie Jo is a young psychopath. A budding serial
Rose is seventeen and on the run, desperate to escape an unspeakable home life in Miami. She finds herself in Possum Kingdom, Tennessee, a tiny little town with secrets as dark as the woods that surround it. Here she meets Robbie Jo, her new best friend. The girl is dirt-poor, brilliant, funny...and bloodthirsty.
Robbie Jo is a young psychopath. A budding serial killer. She hides her true nature from the people of Possum Kingdom-most of them, anyway. The lucky ones.
Rose settles into small-town life with quiet joy. For the first time in her life, she feels safe. For the first time, she falls in love. And she confides it all to her new-found "sister".
As Robbie Jo plays the townspeople like game pieces, as she digs into past atrocity that is better off forgotten, she draws Rose closer and closer.
The battle for Rose's soul has begun. But the stakes are higher than anyone could imagine.
"Possum Kingdom" is an intimate portrait of love and madness, and an epic story of magic, murder, and outrageous ambition. This is supernatural Southern Gothic taken to a whole new level.

First, I'm surprised no on has commented on this strange and wonderful book yet! Author Lorelei Shannon has taken some big risks with this one, and they all pay off fantastically. Told from multiple points of view in a clear and shining voice--including from those of our main character, a runaway from an abusive family, as well as a sexy 15 year old budding serial killer, and poor little runaway dog. Yup, a dog. I laughed out loud and was touched by surprising insights in turns. Not for the squeamish or easily offended, but even the transgressions of characters (and author) are related in such a way as too keep all in perspective, and tongue firmly tucked in cheek. I'm always cautious when recommended a new book, especially one by an author with whom I am not familiar, but Possum Kingdom is an absolute blast. A fantasy-horror hybrid of the most delightfully wicked (or wickedly delightful) kind. Looks like this is one of those "best books that no one is reading" yet--and you really, really should. If you like fun, wacky, sexy and creepy, Possum Kingdom is a sure bet and a must read. Highly recommended!
