Editorial Reviews

Multicultural Review
Crawford offers a basic, yet charming account of various attractions in New York City that expose children to a foreign language while also teaching them about the city itself. The story is written in both English and Spanish and is narrated by a young girl named Anna who is visiting New York City with her parents. The youthful and vibrant picture book is filled with postcards of various popular sites in and around NYC, including Grand Central Station and the World Trade Center Memorial. Each page is filled with a postcard image and letter from Anna about the place, as well as different facts about each site, which are presented in both English and Spanish. Though written for young readers, this engaging story is highly educational and informative, combining language learning with interesting facts so that children come away from their reading having truly gained and learned something. Crawford successfully broadens children's horizons by showing them how globally connected our community is today - both teaching children a second language and showing them the international significance of different sites and places within one of America's largest cities.
Children's Literature - Carolyn Mott Ford
While Anna is visiting New York City with her parents she sends postcards to family and friends back at home. The postcards carry pictures of many landmarks and places of interest in the city. While the messages that Anna writes on the cards are in English, the facts of interest about the various locations are in both English and Spanish. In addition to the illustrations shown on the cards, there are drawings of Anna and some of her adventures as well. This combination of fiction and fact works well, and Anna is an appealing young tourist. Grand Central Station, Broadway, Times Square, the New York Stock Exchange, and the Empire State Building are all featured, as is the World Trade Center Memorial. Kids will learn a little about history as they read the sections about Ellis Island and the Brooklyn Bridge. They will want to visit New York City to ride the carousel in Central Park and see Yankee Stadium. However, including the stadium among the featured sites is a somewhat confusing choice as the old "House That Ruth Built" will soon be replaced. Reviewer: Carolyn Mott Ford
