Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Similarly showcasing Katz's artwork in a lift-the-flap format (this time with laminated rather than board book pages) for the paper-over-board A Potty for Me! The text takes the child's perspective ("I try my brand new potty. It kind of feels okay./ But I'm not ready yet. I want to go and play") through an accident and several other unproductive attempts until-success ("Yeah! I really did it! And now I know I can. I can go in my potty, and I will do it again!"). Brightly patterned clothes, tile and carpet make this an appealing household to visit. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
School Library Journal
PreS-A pleasant and fairly innocuous addition to an already crowded field, this rhymed book with reinforced pages uses color cartoon illustrations of a child of indeterminate gender who tries, with mixed results, to use the potty. The upbeat text employs expressions like "That's okay!" and "Yeah! I really did it!" If you already own Lara Jones's I Love My Potty (Scholastic, 2002) or Harriet Ziefert's Max's Potty and Sara's Potty (both DK, 1999; o.p.), you probably have enough on the subject. But if you need a new title (and remember, there's only so much that's possible in a book of this type), this one will serve its purpose.-Jane Marino, Bronxville Public Library, NY Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Karen Katz
Karen Katz

Karen Katz has written and illustrated more than fifty picture books and novelty books including the bestselling Where Is Baby’s Belly Button? After graduating from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, she attended the Yale Graduate School of Art and Architecture where she became interested in folk art, Indian miniatures, Shaker art, and Mexican art. Her book, Counting Kisses, was named one of the 100 Greatest Books for Kids by Scholastic Parent & Child and was a Children’s Book-of-the-Month Club Main Selection. Karen, her husband Gary Richards, and their daughter, Lena, divide their time between New York City and Saugerties, New York. Learn more about Karen Katz at KarenKatz.com.

Biography

From painting and sculpture to quiltmaking and costume design, Karen Katz has been making art in one form or another all her life. But it was not until she and her husband adopted a baby from Guatemala that she considered a career in children's books. Published in 1997, her debut picture book, Over the Moon, told the story of one adoptive family's happy beginnings in a country far away. Since then, Katz has gone on to create many award-winning picture, board, and novelty books that capture the joys of childhood in simple storylines, vibrant colors, and winsome illustrations. Some include count-down elements (Counting Kisses, Ten Tiny Tickles) or interactive features (Where Is Baby's Belly Button?, Peek-A-Baby); still others introduce holiday traditions (My First Kwanzaa, My First Chinese New Year) or reinforce good habits, manners, or behavior (Excuse Me!, No Biting!, I Can Share).

Perhaps the secret to Katz's success (besides the undeniable appeal of her signature round-headed babies!) can be summed up in this quote taken directly from the author/artist's website: "When an idea for a story pops into my head, I ask these questions: Will a child want to read this book? Will parents want to read this book with their children? Will this book make a child laugh? Will this book make a parent and child feel something? Is there something visual here that will hold a child's interest? Will a child see something in a different way after reading this book? If the answer to any of those questions is 'yes,' then I know I'm on the right track."

Good To Know

Katz explains the difference between designing picture books and board books in this way:
Picture books usually have more words in them but they tell more of a narrative story. Board books are usually simpler. They are generally 6 spreads and are about one concept. When I create a board book, I try to make something that is very interactive for the baby, with flaps and pull tabs and lots of surprises. Board books are a perfect size for a baby's hand to hold and touch. Babies can have an experience all by them selves with a good board book and can also have a good lap-time experience with a mommy or daddy or caregiver. Picture books take a little more care since the pages can rip. With a board book, you can throw it in a stroller, chew on the corners and even wipe off mashed peas.

Katz has received numerous awards for her work, including:

  • Smithsonian, People, and Parent Guide magazines Best Books designation, all 1997, all for Over the Moon
  • Bill Martin, Jr. Picture Book Award nomination, Florida Reading Association Award nomination, and Child magazine Best Book designation, all 2000, all for The Colors of Us
  • National Parenting Publications Gold Award, and Child magazine Best Book designation, both 2001, and Bank Street School Books Committee Best Book designation, 2002, all for Counting Kisses
  • Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Seal Award, 2002, for Counting Kisses and Twelve Hats for Lena.

Its a great potty training book!

I got this book for my son. We have been trying to get him to go potty for a while now. I sat down with him to read it and I noticed that a few days later he was starting to go to the bathroom to the "big boy potty" or so he calls it. I would really recommend this book.

      Potty Training

My 3 year old daughter has always loved Karen Katz books. I have been trying to find some Potty training books for her, but honestly most of the books I find to read to her are really fowl! I'm actually embarrassed to read them to her! I happened to stumble across this book as I had no idea Karen Katz had written a book about potty training, and I loved it! it is very appropriate to read aloud, and my daughter loves it too!

      Not Exciting Enough

I bought this book for my 2 year-old. It wasn't interesting enough to hold her interest.

Great potty training preparation for young toddlers!

My daughter is 23 months old and we have been reading this book for several months in preparation for potty training. She loves the colorful, age appropriate illustrations and the lift the flap format. The text is just perfect for her age, and has given her a positive reference point now that she has started to use the potty. As a parent, I am finding this so helpful! I highly recommend this book!

      Desparate mom

This book makes a different for me. For months I struggled to get my 21 months old child to use the potty. Within weeks after I read the book to her everynight, she volunteers to go on the potty. I would recommend this book to all moms.

      My Son Loves this Book

My son is 2 1/2 and absolutely loves this book. For the last month, since the day we got the book, he's been insisting we read it every night before going to bed and sometimes even during the day which is unusual for him. He tells me what each page is about and even tells me things from the book during the day. We're using the book to try and get ready for potty training soon. Up to this point anything we said about the potty had been making him upset...so this has definitely been a start in the right direction!

      WONDERFUL BOOK!!

My 20 month daughter loves this book! Her vocabulary increased so much and she always goes potty when we start reading it the second time around. She loves pointing at the 'tee-tee' on the pants after the accident and says 'that's ok'. She points to the word 'swoosh' and pretends to read it everytime. We keep this in the bathroom and she won't go potty without it!!! LOVE IT!!

      Amazing

My daughter had been going back and forth between wanting to use the 'potty-chair' and not. I had seen a lot of books out there...nothing special until this one caught my eye. The very first time we read this to Emma...she was hooked. Wanted to read it all the time, and was potty trained completely within' the month. A++++

      Great

This book is terrific. My child learned how to poop and pee within days. I recommend this book to any parent who has a child who hasn't learned yet.

      Great book for potty

This is a great book that my daughter loves to read while sitting on the potty. It has pages that fold open so it makes it more fun than just a regular book. The pictures are cute and the kid could be a little boy or a girl so its great for any child.
