Power and Imagination: City-States in Renaissance Italy

This digital edition was derived from ACLS Humanities E-Book's online version of the same title.

Editorial Reviews

Los Angeles Times
[A] brilliant study... of the extraordinary explosion of expression in art and scholarship which made Italy the model for Europe.
The American Historical Review, Vol. 87, No. 1 (Feb., 1982) - Robert Finlay
Rich in detail and vigorous in argument, Lauro Martines's history of Italy from the eleventh to the sixteenth centuries is a sweeping synthesis of research on the Renaissance. Half the book is devoted to "power," that is, to tracing the development of the Italian city-state from a loosely organized, sometimes anarchic commune to a signorial and territorial state. Florence, of course, is given its due, but Martines also ranges across central and northern Italy.
Renaissance Quarterly, Vol. 33, No. 4 (Winter, 1980) - Richard A. Goldthwaite
Martines has given us a very particular interpretation of the Italian Renaissance. The strength of his book is in the clarity of its themes and the single-mindedness with which it sticks to the subject. The author, already well known for his studies of Florentine humanists and lawyers, stakes out his position with an impressive command of the materials; and if his argument sometimes becomes disembodied and impressionistic, it is seldom lacking in interest.
