Power and the Glory: Music & Voices of NFL Films

All Music Guide - Adam Greenberg
The thing that makes NFL films great is the interplay between the slow-motion shots of astounding plays and the music that accompanies them. Unfortunately for this album, the word "accompanies" is a vital portion of the equation. Without the films, the music is merely adequate. There are pieces that sound like old TV themes, pieces that are meant to invoke dramatic effects, and the whole run of possibilities that can follow are represented. While the three composers, Sam Spence, Tom Hedden, and David Robidoux, made exceptional music for the films, it is just that -- music FOR the films. If a fan is looking for the music, they should definitely look into buying the films, so they get the whole picture instead of half of it.

    Oh, The Memories!

Almost, every male of my "vintage" will immediately recognize the music and "the voice" of the great John Facenda and they will spark fond memories of what was then a unique look at sports in general and football in particular. What surprised me was that even younger generations still identify with these sounds. As much as anything NFL Films was responsible for elevating professional football to the top of the American sports pyramid. These snippits of the NFL Films soundtracks are both exhilirating and motivational and will serve as a great addition to any sports fan's media library. Truly a wonderful slice of Americana.

Must have for a real NFL fan

Lately these songs and monologues have become popular at stadiums, on radio stations and TV during NFL programming. Even without the films to accompany them, these songs are timeless. With John Facenda as the "voice of the NFL," this CD includes classic tracks such as "Up She Rises," "The Raiders" and "The Equalizer." Although the titles may not ring a bell, the second the song is heard, NFL fans know exactly what song it is. I know for a fact that "Up She Rises" has been used on numerous commercials, and for the opening of the show "Everybody Loves Raymond." "Round Up" has been used on Jared Subway commercials, and the list goes on and on. This CD is a must have for the NFL fan.
