Overview

Jake Thorson, the Vikings team captain, gets all the credit. He leads the team in home runs, and everybody loves him for it — that is, everyone but his brother, Luke. Luke isn’t popular, and he hasn't hit a single home run — but he does have the team’s best batting average as well as the most stolen bases. However, those types of things don’t really get you the attention that a homer does, and Luke’s tired of standing in the Jake’s shadow.

About the Author

Jesus Aburto has worked in the comic book industry for more than eleven years. In that time, he has illustrated popular characters such as Wolverine, Iron Man, Blade, and the Punisher. Recently, Jesus started his own illustration studio called Graphikslava. He lives in Monterrey, Mexico, with his kids Ilka, Mila, Aleph, and his beloved wife. Jesus enjoys spending his spare time with family and friends.

Fernando Cano is an emerging illustrator born in Mexico City, Mexico. He currently resides in Monterrey, Mexico, where he works as a full-time illustrator and colorist at Graphikslava studio. He has done illustration work for Marvel, DC Comics, and role-playing games like Pathfinder from Paizo Publishing. In his spare time, he enjoys hanging out with friends, singing, rowing, and drawing.

Ok, let me start out by announcing that I am NOT a sports fan. I'm not into sports...not a sports person whatsoever. You may have guessed this by the fact that I run a network of nerdy websites. I mean, I review books....what'd you seriously expect, right? Here is the thing with these releases from Capstone Kids [Stone Arch Books]....they rock, plain and simple. Why? Read on.... I gave this stack of books from Capstone and Sports Illustrated Kids to my own children and they went nuts! They too aren't into sports, but these aren't books for jocks. These are extreme sports and the focus is really on the characters and story. The sports hobbies are really just a backdrop. They're fun and interesting and not at all geared just towards jocky kids. When it arrived in movie theaters in October of 2019, one of things that made Todd Phillips' Joker feel markedly different from the slew of other popular films with comic-book origins was its simmering, relatively minimalist score. While she relied primarily on the traditional orchestral instrumentation of John Williams, Danny Elfman, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hildur Gudjnadottir's take on the category was something more intimate and internal. Using Phillips' screenplay as her inspiration, her ominous score dwells in the lower pitch range, with the cello representing Arthur Fleck, and tympani among a small handful of other highlighted timbres. Recurring themes include pounding heartbeats and footsteps, as in early track "Following Sophie," the pulsing "Meeting Bruce Wayne," and about halfway through, the more expansive "Arthur Comes to Sophie," which adds pitch-bending dissonance as well as instruments. The score continues to build gradually in terms of strength and texture, bringing more instruments to the foreground as it progresses. In fact, at least most of the time, a whole 90-piece orchestra is performing the score, but it was mixed to push the majority of components into the background -- often to the point of being inaudible. This was intended to symbolize the complicated, emergent layers of the psyche of the main character and something Gudjnadottir has referred to as a ghostly presence within the recording. By the 12th of 17 cues, "Subway" has audible brass and denser strings, and the final two tracks come the closest to more-typical contemporary thriller fare while remaining unique to the world of {|Joker|}. Along with its unsettling combination of percussive effects and plodding, sagging sustained pitches (as well as Foley and field recordings also in play), {|Gudjnadottir|}'s fresh approach and inspired mixing technique make {|Joker|}'s score not only effective but distinctive. ~ Marcy Donelson
