Overview

I've seen him on the news. Followed the stories about what happened in Ohio. John Smith, out there, on the run. To the world, he's a mystery. But to me . . . he's one of us.

Nine of us came here, but sometimes I wonder if time has changed us—if we all still believe in our mission. How can I know? There are six of us left. We're hiding, blending in, avoiding contact with one another . . . but our Legacies are developing, and soon we'll be equipped to fight. Is John Number Four, and is his appearance the sign I've been waiting for? And what about Number Five and Six? Could one of them be the raven-haired girl with the stormy eyes from my dreams? The girl with powers that are beyond anything I could ever imagine? The girl who may be strong enough to bring the six of us together?

They caught Number One in Malaysia.
Number Two in England.
And Number Three in Kenya.
They tried to catch Number Four in Ohio—and failed.

I am Number Seven. One of six still alive.

And I'm ready to fight.

Editorial Reviews

The Lorien Legacies continue. In I Am Number Four, the diabolical Mogadorians had tracked down and exterminated the writers of the newsletter They Walk Among Us; but now person or persons unknown are continuing to issue the newsletter, keeping readers updated on what is happened to John and the other Lorien Nine. Is this part of a devious Mogadorian plot or does it herald the beginning of a popular movement? (P.S. This Barnes & Noble Exclusive Edition of The Power of Six contains an attached, removable eight-page issue of the newsletter.)

School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Following on the heels of the action-packed I Am Number Four (HarperCollins, 2010), The Power of Six opens with the introduction of a new character, Number Seven, also known as Marina, who, with her Garde, Adelina, has been confined to a convent in Spain for several years following their arrival by spaceship from the planet Lorien. One afternoon, while exploring the Internet for her allotted 10 minutes, she comes across a reference to John Smith of Ohio, which gives her the impetus to flee her relatively safe hideout and search for the remaining survivors. As they age, the Lorien children's Legacies, or powers, are beginning to emerge and strengthen, leading them to take the fight to the heart of the Mogadorian stronghold. While this second book in the proposed six-book series has many of the same weaknesses of the first-a lack of character development, pedestrian dialogue, and uneven continuity-the nonstop action and violence-packed fight sequences will keep fans of the first novel happy. Think Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles instead of Heinlein's Starship Troopers. Readers should expect mayhem and monsters rather than traditional science fiction, but the popularity of the first book and the movie will create a demand for this and subsequent titles.—Jane Henriksen Baird, Anchorage Public Library, AK

This book continues the story that started in I am Number 4. It has a lot of action and furthers the back story of the group from Lorien. It also introduces us to more of the group and their powers. It is a good read and leaves you wanting the next in the series to learn how it ends.

I read I am number four in august (2010) and really liked it. I just saw the movie adaptation yesterday also which I really liked. The only part i didn't like about the movie was how they portrayed the bad guys (i dont remember the names, i read the book like a 100 books ago and they didnt say it clear enough in the movie). A girl in my math class had the newer version of i am number four (with the movie cover) and let me read the excerpt of the power of six. I really like the thought of the author putting the book in another numbers eyes. Number seven sounds cool and i'm glad it's from a girls point of view (for me and other female readers out there) but i still liked John (4) in the first. i cant wait until it comes out :DDDDD

It includes all of the normal copy of the book, an extended chapter(great! Loved it!), character profiles, messages from pittacus lore, trailers from the first movie, and the first chapter of the first lost files book. In my book, it was worth it!

I think that this was a really good book. If you liked "I Am Number Four" you would definitly love this book. It's more about the action this time, and less about John's relationship with Sarah. I kind of liked it better that way, with more fighting. I think that the only disappointment in this book is Seven. I found her parts very boring, and lacking excitment. The only part where she even stars fighting visbin about the last two chapters. But I think Lore definitly made up for the lack of excitement in her part with Four's part. Overall I really enjoyed this book. And if you liked the first book, then you should definitly read this one.

Maybe i was expecting too much... not to be a hater or anything but Four has some big problems. Seriously he has to stop crying and breaking down emotionally. Instead of going into depression every time someone dies or comes close to getting killed how bout getting a fire lit under his butt, get angry and fight it out like Six and Nine! Lore seem to be bent upon making Four the weakest link in every way possible. I kept waiting for his moment, when he gets this awesome legacy or kicks mog butt or something but it never came. And finally, how do Six and Nine know so much about the stuff in their chests when they've been locked up in a mountian and they lost their Cepan? I will still read the next book though.

The series is a good read, but when you first ope it, it looks like it a 340 page book - then you find the first two chapters are the last 2 chapters of the last book you just read, and then two chapters each from the next three books - bait and switch. Other major authors' books are 1000 pages +, and about $10. What you actually get here is the chance to re-read what you just read, and an ad for the sequels, but only about 200 pages of new content. What a total rip off.

Over all the power of six is a fine book, the main character Four is trying to saves the world classic. Four is from a distant planet called Lorien, he was sent to earth with 17 other people 8 grade the ones who develop superpowers and 9 cepen the trainers. Although the book does have swear words in it so it would no be very good for some people. Four is being hunted by other hostile aliens. Four is next to be killed because numbers 1-3 have been killed. My last impression s are that the book is well written but could be better also the book should not have some words in it.
