Overview

For the five teens who modeled as Disney Hologram Imaging hosts, life is beginning to settle down when an intriguing video arrives to Philby's computer at school. It's a call for action: the Overtakers, a group of Disney villains, seem to be plotting to attempt a rescue of two of their leaders, both of whom the Disney Imagineers have hidden away somewhere following a violent encounter in Epcot. A staged attack by new Overtakers at Downtown Disney, startles the group.

One of their own, Charlene, is acting strange of late. Has she tired of her role as a Kingdom Keeper or is there something more sinister at play? When caught sneaking into Epcot as her DHI, acting strictly against the group's rules, Finn and Philby take action.

Has the "impossible" occurred? Have the Overtakers created their own holograms? Have they found a way to "jump" from the Virtual Maintenance Network onto the Internet, and if so, what does that mean for the safety of the parks, and the spread and reach of the Overtakers? Are they recruiting an army from outside the parks?

A dark cloud in the Kingdom Keeper era is unfolding, and with dissention in their own ranks, it's unclear if there's any chance of escape.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

There is trouble among the Kingdom Keepers in this fully-fleshed addition to Ridley Pearson's Disney hologram series. Recently, Charlenehas been behaving erratically, causing worry among other team members. At worse, the crisis cuts to the core of their mission: Have the Overtakers begun an insidious digital invasion? With suspicion even in their own ranks, the Keepers must regain their bearings—and the world's security. Now in trade paperback and NOOK Book. (P.S. This 400+-page novel is set in the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Orlando, Disney Hollywood Studios, and Downtown Disney.)

Brian Monahan

VOYA
The Kingdom Keepers series is about kids who become holograms when they fall asleep and have to protect the Disney parks from the Overtakers, who are the bad people from all of Disney's stories. In Power Play, the Kingdom Keepers, led by sixteen-year-old Finn Whitman, have to save the parks from the Evil Queen and save all of the children under the queen's spell. This reviewer, a very big fan of Disney and fictional books, liked this book. Many young children up to ninth grade will love to read these books, maybe even older than that because of the exciting and unpredictable plot. Reviewer: Chase Carter, Teen Reviewer
Children's Literature
In this latest installment of the "Kingdom Keepers" series, the five Disney World Kingdom Keepers hold out hope that their lives may be settling down enough for them to catch up at school, enjoy their crushes on each other or certain school mates, and spend time with their families. But those hopes crash quickly when Charlene starts behaving strangely. As the other Kingdom Keepers begin investigating, they find out that two of the captured Disney villains have created yet another plan to escape the Disney Imagineers and align themselves again with "Overtakers" who share their same goals: take over the Virtual Maintenance Network and wreak havoc on the various Disney Kingdoms. As the Kingdom Keepers work to solve the mystery of who is really in charge and how they can keep the Disney Kingdoms safe, they find interesting allies in several Disney characters. But is any of it enough to stop the evil villains? For those who are already into the series, this book is sure to please. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
VOYA
Finn Whitman and the Kingdom Keepers (Kingdom Keepers: Disney after Dark [Disney, 2005/VOYA February 2006], Kingdom Keepers II: Disney at Dawn [Disney, 2008], Kingdom Keepers III: Disney in Shadow [Hyperion, 2010]) are back, continuing their quest to protect Disney magic from the Overtakers, "a group of fanatical Disney villain characters within the Parks bent on taking over and ?stealing the magic,'" and the stakes are rising. The Overtakers' leaders, Maleficent and Chernabog, are imprisoned by Disney, held in deep security, and Cruella De Vil and Snow White's Evil Queen are intent on breaking them out, casting spells on unsuspecting kids—foes, friends, and Kingdom Keepers themselves. On top of that, there is evidence that the Overtakers have found a way to jump from Disney's Virtual Maintenance Network to the Internet. It is not just the Parks at stake anymore—it is the world! Well-known Disney characters, Orlando Disney Park hallmarks, and cutting-edge technology flesh out this action-adventure, good-versus-evil battle of wits topped off with a dash of romance and rivalry (yes, the book really is all of the above). Pearson knows how to please his audience: the characters are well developed; the plot and pacing build in intensity, with plenty of twists and turns; and the fantastical seems both plausible and possible. The fact that the Keepers' parents are paying attention, with supporting roles of their own to play, is a bonus. Best suited for pleasure reading, Power Play is sure to be a hit with middle grade readers who enjoy fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat reads, as well as those enamored of all things Disney (possibly a parent or two). Meet the Author

Ridley Pearson
Ridley Pearson
Ridley Pearson is the award-winning coauthor, along with Dave Barry, of Peter and the Starcatchers, Peter and the Shadow Thieves, and Peter and the Secret of Rundoon. He has also written more than twenty best-selling novels, including Killer Weekend, and the young-adult fantasy The Kingdom Keepers. He was the first American to be awarded the Raymond Chandler/Fulbright Fellowship in Detective Fiction at Oxford University.

Biography

Crime may not always pay, but crime fiction always sells, and Ridley Pearson is one of the stars of the genre, the kind of writer whose royalties keep his family fed and cover a few extras as well (like, say, his own airplane). Yet Pearson didn't spend his youth dreaming of bestsellerdom. His first ambition was to be a musician, and he spent most of his twenties writing and performing folk-rock songs. The idea that he might become a novelist came later. As he explained in a Barnes and Noble interview, he was reading a Robert Ludlum novel when "a voice spoke up from inside me and said, 'I can do this.'" (Once he began writing and discovered firsthand the skill involved in crafting a cohesive thriller, he realized how much he had presumed!)

Pearson is renowned for fast-paced, thrill-a-minute suspense novels that include "a rare humanism and attention to detail" (Publishers Weekly). In a Greenwich Magazine interview he called his work "aerobic fiction, because I hope to get your heart pounding and get you turning pages." Entertainment Weekly dubbed him "the thinking person's Robert Ludlum."

As his fans know, Pearson works hard at nailing the details of forensic investigation and police procedure. In Undercurrents (the first novel in his Seattle-based Lou Boldt mystery series) his research was so thorough—he consulted an expert in oceanography—that the book helped convict an actual murderer. A Washington state prosecuting attorney happened to be reading it while working on a case similar to Pearson's fictional one: A woman's body had been found in a bay, and at first it appeared that she had committed suicide by jumping off a bridge. The oceanographer mentioned in Pearson's acknowledgments was called in as an expert witness to help prove that, based on tidal currents, the woman must have been dead before the time her husband claimed to have last seen her. Due largely to the expert testimony, the victim's husband was convicted of second-degree murder.

Of course, there's more to a Pearson novel than research. "Just what is it about Ridley Pearson that makes him the best damn thriller writer on the planet?" mused Bill Ott in BookList. "We've celebrated the forensic detail, the taut plotting, the multidimensional characters, and the screw-tightening suspense, but lots of fiction writers do all that. Here's a theory: Pearson is a master at manipulating opposites. His stories are forever jumping from high concept to small scale, from positive to negative charges, manipulating our emotions and minds with their polar hip-hopping."

When he's not writing, Pearson still makes music—he's the bass guitarist for the Rock Bottom Remainders, an amateur rock band made up of professional writers including Stephen King, Dave Barry, Amy Tan, and Mitch Albom (the group's motto, coined by Barry: "We play music as well as Metallica writes novels").

It was while Pearson was in Miami to play with the Rock Bottom Remainders that he told Barry about his idea (actually, daughter Paige's idea) for a prequel to Peter Pan. The two authors had such a good time hashing out possibilities over breakfast that Pearson asked Barry to write the book with him. Published in 2004, their clever collaboration Peter and the Starcatchers became a huge bestseller, spawning two sequels (Peter and the Shadow Thieves in 2006 and Peter and the Secret of Rundoon in 2007) and a series of spin-off children's chapter books.

Even though Pearson thoroughly enjoys crafting juvenile fiction, his adult fans need not worry that he's abandoned his high-voltage crime novels. Indeed, he has said that writing gives him the same "adrenaline rush," no matter which audience he is targeting: Readers of all ages appreciate the imagination, suspense, and an impeccable eye for detail he brings to all his fiction.

Good To Know

Pearson calls himself a workaholic, "not so much by desire as out of necessity," since he reserves a lot of time for his two young daughters. His hobbies, which he now defines as "something you once did and no longer have the time for," include recreational tree climbing, fly-fishing, backyard volleyball, snow boarding—and, of course, bass guitar in his rock band. An avid reviser, Pearson says, "I'm said to have a nervous, worrying disposition, but rarely feel I live up to that description—perhaps internal calm is expressed as external nervosa."

Pearson loves to travel, especially to southern France, with wife Marcelle and second child Storey, who is adopted from China. We're certain to do a good deal of international travel in the years to come. He also attends local symphony and theater. But his "favorite avocation is to spend an evening around our dining table with two or three other couples. This, I feel, is where many of the world's ills are solved, and many souls restored. Mine, especially."

These books gave my son the gift of reading!

My son is functioning autistic. As much as I tried he never ever like to read books until the Kingdom Keepers came along. Jon, my son, loves all things Disney especially anything to do with Disneyworld. When he began to read these wonderful books its as if he has discovered the world of reading for the first time. He has read every one of the series and is very patiently waiting for next month when the fourth book arrives in his hands. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Mr. Pearson for giving the gift of loving reading to my son.

Great series, but some Disney errors

The Kingdom Keepers books are amazing, they have a great story, but many fans of Disney who know of the characters mentioned in these books will find mistakes, and being a Disney fan, that bugs me. Even so, if you have a great imagination, it's not hard to be able to pictiure the events taking place at the Disney parks. Overall a great read!

    So Impatient For This Book!!!

I have read every other kingdom keepers book and i cant wait for this one to come out. With the cliff hanger at the end of the third book the fourth is sure to be more intense. Ridley Pearson has done an amazing job with the detail and story line that goes into these books. If your looking for a way disney can be intese pick up the first book and read on through to the fourth. This should not disappoint!
