Overview

In schools and society, power and privilege makes inequalities appear natural because of prevailing ideology that suggests that the social and economic systems are meritocratic, and that the poor and needy are in their particular circumstance because they are lazy or because they lack moral fortitude or intellectual capacity. People's experiences with marginalization and discrimination form a continuum, where to be poor and non-white often has the greatest social consequences. This book systematically investigates and uncovers the taken for granted aspects of power and privilege in education, and provides teachers and researchers with critical analyses and practical solutions for improving the education of poor and minority students. It addresses the issues of students' home culture and the culture of schools, and explores the hegemonic aspects of school curricula and pedagogy that universalizes dominant group interests at the expense of minority students' learning. The book synthesizes the literature on culturally responsive curriculum and pedagogy to explain how schools can become more inclusive, and how they can better serve disadvantaged students. It offers recommendations and policy considerations that are aimed at increasing social justice in education and improving student performance and school failure.
