Powerslide

Overview

I had to think fast. The 720 wasn't going to happen. I no longer had the speed or the correct angle. I hit the coping on the other side and launched into a 360 cannonball. A 360 cannonball is a full rotation in the air while holding the front and back of the board. I was fully around the 180 when I thought of something I shouldn't have. What if I didn't land this?

Casey is at the end of his final year in high school. He hasn't applied to college, and, other than skateboarding, he doesn't believe he's good at much of anything. When a young movie star offers him a job as a stunt double in an upcoming skateboarding movie, Casey is stoked. It's his dream job. But when word gets out about Casey's new gig, a local skater has other ideas about who would make the best stunt double. What price will Casey pay to realize his dream?

Editorial Reviews

Booklist
"Fans of skateboarding and reluctant readers alike will be thrilled because most of the story is action...[Ross] executes the simple plot well and keeps it moving at a clip, and he never forgets to include a few epic wipeouts."
Children's Literature - Jennifer Lehmann
Casey does not know what he is going to do with his life. At seventeen, he has graduated from high school. Most of his friends are planning to go to college, but he is not sure that further education is for him. His dream is to turn his love of skateboarding into a career. When teen sensation Jack Coagen contacts him about training for his upcoming role in a skateboarding movie, Casey has to say yes, especially when being Jack's stunt double on the more difficult moves is thrown into the deal. Casey's skateboarding rival, Goat, hears about the deal and challenges Casey to a series of competitions. Jack agrees to let Goat's ideas determine who will be his stunt double. Goat's suggestions get more and more dangerous, and Casey does not feel like he has a choice, even when there could be tragic consequences. This young adult book is written at a third grade reading level, so it is accessible for reluctant readers. The risks involved in the plot will attract readers, especially those interested in skateboarding. Casey is a fully developed character who grows throughout the book. The other characters are one-dimensional, and the lack of adults, other than an unethical and distant agent and a paparazzo, makes the plot more unbelievable than it would have been otherwise. Casey's friend Sara is more well-rounded than the other characters, but we never get to see her skateboarding with the detail that is given to Casey and Goat, even though her skateboarding skills are part of Casey's attraction. The main character and suspenseful plot fill the few pages well and create an engaging, if shallow, read. Reviewer: Jennifer Lehmann
