Purpose: The aim is to provide succinct information in a format that can be rapidly retrieved by physicians caring for patients with various cardiovascular disorders, in order to achieve an accurate diagnosis and implement effective therapy.
Audience: It is intended for physicians of all specialties, including cardiologists and general practitioners. The author is an associate professor at the University of Ottawa, department of medicine and division of cardiology.
Features: The book provides information on a broad variety of cardiovascular diseases and uses effective visual aids in the form of algorithms and well-illustrated pictures to help readers understand various mechanisms of disease processes and their treatment. The book is organized into short paragraphs followed by bullet-points of key concepts with many visual aids. Some chapters end with suggested reading topics. A chapter entitled "ECG Interpretation Made Easy" provides many ECG examples showing a wide variety of arrhythmias and conduction disturbances, helping readers to rapidly interpret these tracings. The author also occasionally makes recommendations which may differ from recommendations from official bodies, but the official recommendations are also included.
Assessment: This is an easy to read book on cardiovascular diseases intended for all physicians, but it is also an excellent resource for medical students, residents, and cardiovascular disease fellows.
