Reviewer: Dana Smetherman, MD (Ochsner Clinic Foundation) Description: This book serves as a guide to radiologists who are making the transition from the analog to the digital realm in mammography. It includes narrative chapters outlining the basics of digital mammography, including the physics involved, and an extensive atlas of pathologic processes as they appear on digital mammograms. Purpose: The author intends the book to be used to help breast imagers understand the value of digital mammography. Certainly, in this era where the vast majority of radiologists who do breast imaging have either recently incorporated digital mammography into their practices or are contemplating making this transition, these objectives are worthwhile. The book meets these objectives, though it is quite a narrow niche. Audience: Although primarily intended for practicing radiologists, it is also appropriate for residents and technologists who are assessing the need for digital mammography in their practices. Some of the material, particularly the atlas portions (though excellent) may be a little simplistic for practicing radiologists. Features: The author begins with four chapters that briefly cover the history of breast imaging, physics of digital mammography, a description of mammographic equipment, and a review of normal anatomy and reporting. This is followed by an extensive atlas with excellent images — probably the greatest strength of the book. Although the image quality is quite good, there is not a tremendous difference between the appearance of most findings on digital and analog mammographic images. Nonetheless, particularly for residents, this information could be very useful. The narrative chapters are fairly basic and the material is probably familiar to most practicing radiologists. One of the biggest adjustments in incorporating digital mammography into a practice seems to be the required work flow changes. More suggestions and observations regarding this area may be helpful if future editions are planned. Conversely, the conversion to digital mammography seems to be occurring at such a rapid pace in this country that future editions may not be necessary. Assessment: Overall, this brief book is well put together and offers a nice overview of the topic. There are not many other books in this field to which to compare it as it is a fairly limited subject. It is probably most useful to residents or perhaps radiologists early in practice.
