Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

On her blog, Gina Rudan calls genius "the other g-spot." This popular motivational guru thinks that genius is not just sexy; it's also accessible and something we all share. Her Practical Genius demystifies this elusive attribute, showing that we can all learn to activate our capacity for your unique strengths, passions, values, and creativity. Rudan shows that far from being a rare, private gift, true genius has social and business dimensions that can enhance every arena of our lives. A new approach to turning on our talents.

Publishers Weekly
Leadership development coach Rudan challenges readers to intertwine their strengths, passions, and values to establish the complete formula for success. She offers a series of reflective exercises to help readers find their innate genius by identifying, taking responsibility for and using both their own soft assets (values, creativity, passion) and hard assets (strengths, skills, expertise). Rudan surrounded herself with authors, educators, and entrepreneurs who were living at the intersection of what they love and excel at, and she likewise encourages readers to cultivate meaningful relationships that will feed their genius, incorporate brain food into their diets, get plenty of sleep, consume content voraciously, and learn to shut down and unplug to let their own intuitiveness flourish. Rudan warns that meaningless tweets deplete genius. Although her methods sound familiar, this serves best as a workbook for corporate clients who have gone through her coaching firsthand. As a stand-alone without the full force of her personality, the book feels flat and hackneyed. Illus. (Oct.)
Kirkus Reviews
A leadership coach invites readers to evaluate their true potential and challenges them against complacency. Rudan asks, "How do smart, motivated, accomplished people like us, who are walking around with all the human assets one could ever hope for, end up in this no-man's land?" She breaks down the components of genius into five elements, explaining that "every one of us has the capacity for genius. Anyone one of us could achieve or discuss or express something so extraordinary that it could change the world." Unfortunately, her counsel is severely limited. She introduces a series of underdeveloped ideas, such as in the chapter entitled "Market Your Genius," which encourages readers to use their natural talents to break out of routine. Here she fails to describe how to identify these talents or offer wisdom on how to break up the routine. Rudan is most engaging when she explores her personal narrative, most notably when she urges readers to write their own stories and makes use of catchy wordplay (such as when she encourages readers to find their "Other G-Spot," the place between their heart and mind). Ultimately, though, readers are left somewhat adrift. According to Rudan, it's all as simple as getting readers to put forth the effort because "self innovation is at their fingertips." Heavy on inspiration, light on concrete advice.
From the Publisher
"Positive, insightful, and generous, this book will go a long way in helping you realize that genius is a choice." —-Seth Godin

Everyone is a genius, or was once. Tragically, life stifles the genius within most people in the work world. This smothering begins in childhood, and, by the time most people become adults, their genius languishes beneath a slag heap of convention and custom. In her inspiring book, exuberant personal development whiz Gina Amaro Rudan explains how you can tap into your natural genius and rev up your life. Rudan’s ideas are not groundbreaking, but her joyful, infectious enthusiasm elevates these familiar concepts beyond the usual self-help fare. getAbstract recommends Rudan’s iconoclastic manual to those inclined toward self-development who yearn to live life fearlessly to the fullest.

    In a Word...GENIUS!

Gina's lighthearted, no-nonsense approach was so perfect for me. Just like the title reads, it's PRACTICAL! Made me think, more than once, "If I had only done that back when..." So easy, so simple and gave me the power to know that my genius lies within. I couldn't put it down!
