Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Daniel Loiterstein, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This book provides a multidisciplinary overview of current treatment modalities of late life depression.
Purpose: This is a worthy addition to the literature and the authors achieve their goal of providing an overview of current management of late life depression. Pertinent information is included for use by most clinicians.
Audience: Healthcare professionals from multiple disciplines, including nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, psychiatrists, and primary care physicians will find this book useful. Students with a special interest in geriatrics will also find this book valuable, but less advanced students may be overwhelmed with detail. The editors are accomplished scholars in the field of geriatric psychiatry. Each chapter is authored by experts from the individual disciplines important to late life depression. All involved with the publishing of this book are well credentialed.
Features: All relevant subjects to the management to late life depression are included. The first three chapters include introductory material and information on diagnosis of depression in the elderly. Medical treatment modalities such as psychopharmacology and electroconvulsive therapy are written about in detail. Topics such as the primary care physician's role in the management of depression and depression in the physically ill are given special care. A significant amount of attention is conferred on the roles of clinical psychologists, nurses, and occupational therapists. Excellent use of tables, figures, and case material are features that make this book exceptional. The table of contents is not particularly useful but the outline preceding each chapter corrects this deficiency. At the end of each chapter is a listing of key points. The references for each chapter are complete and invaluable for locating primary articles.
Assessment: This is a complete and extremely useful addition to the growing field of geriatric psychiatry. It correctly recognizes the need for multiple disciplines to effectively diagnose and treat late life depression. This is a comprehensive book that retains the usefulness of a handbook.
