Description: A lot has changed in pain management since the 2008 edition of this book and this update was necessary to keep it relevant. It is comprehensive and to the point, targeting every aspect of pain evaluation and management.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a standalone reference for all aspects of pain management. This book covers the basic science, the clinical aspects, and the injection techniques.
Audience: The audience includes a wide range of pain clinicians — those who practice chronic pain management, pain researchers, fellows reviewing for the pain medicine boards, and rotating residents who want an in-depth discussion of the field.
Features: Nine sections each review a special topic in pain. The first few sections are dedicated to the clinical evaluation of pain, pharmacology of pain medicines, and diagnostic tools both physical and psychological to evaluate and treat pain. The next few sections focus on regional and interventional pain techniques. The last sections deal with pain management in special populations. Despite its exhaustive coverage of pain topics, the book is still portable, and it is well illustrated and well referenced. Information is up to date and recommendations are based on evidence. The procedures are described very clearly in easy to follow steps. The book comes with access to an online version that is easy to navigate and even easier to search. The online version also provides direct access to references by clicking on the links.
Assessment: This edition continues in the tradition of a comprehensive, practical book of pain management. It is the only book that sufficiently covers both the theory and practice of medicine. The online version makes it accessible 24/7 and easy to use even in the busiest settings.
