Description: This is the second edition of a detailed guide to neuroangiography and introduction to interventional neuroradiologic procedures. The first edition was published in 1997.
Purpose: The purpose is help readers become more competent neuroangiographers by providing a concise introduction for the beginning angiographer as well as sufficient detail for more experienced fellows and practicing neuroradiologists. The book aims to help readers master this area which has become increasingly difficult in recent years due to increased use of noninvasive imaging.
Audience: It is directed towards neurointerventional fellows or practicing radiologists who wish to improve their knowledge and have an updated perspective on neuroangiography and neurovascular disease. The author is the director of the interventional neuroradiology section at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
Features: The book is sufficiently detailed and well referenced and uses high quality images including cerebral angiograms, CT, and MR of normal and pathologic neurovasculature. The helpful illustrations cover catheter manipulation, normal anatomy and variants, and pathologic conditions. The final 110 pages are devoted to basic neurointerventional procedures, an important feature of the book. As the author points out, often in fellowships much of the experience in catheter manipulation and diagnostic neuroangiography occurs during such cases.
Assessment: The author is successful in creating a high quality useful textbook of neuroangiography. This should be considered as a useful resource in departmental and personal libraries of neuroradiology fellows and practicing neuroradiologists. It is comparable in quality to other popular books on this subject, and the section on basic neurointervention stands out as a significant improvement.
