Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Isaac Kleinman, MD (Baylor College of Medicine)
Description: This is the fourth edition of a text on orthopedics first published in 1980. The previous edition was published in 1991. The book is copiously illustrated with x-rays, diagrams, line drawings, and photographs. It is organized in two sections, the first dealing with musculoskeletal disorders by anatomic region, and the second dealing with general disease processes such as the arthritides, infection, roentgenographic diagnosis, and sports medicine as well as a variety of "minor" and often neglected topics such as reflex dystrophy, leg length problems, and crutch and brace fitting.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a text on orthopedics that would be useful as a practical guide in the daily care of patients.
Audience: The text is directed at medical students, residents, and general medical practitioners and is intended as a practical reference.
Features: This book is distinguished by an abundance of helpful illustrations. It has a good index and is well referenced. There is an long chapter on the radiologic aspects of orthopedic diseases that is a mini-text in itself. Students and residents will find useful glossaries of orthopedic terminology.
Assessment: This is an excellent book that meets all its goals admirably. It is put together by people who understand the needs and viewpoints of the generalist. While being a practical book, it does not neglect discussion of principles and fundamentals. I would recommend a single improvement: the addition of a few line drawings to clarify the pathology in some of the x-ray photographs that do not reproduce well. This book is highly recommended.
