3 Stars from Doody

This is a useful new book dealing with practical aspects of radiation protection written by a program director in a school of radiography. It also includes chapters by technologists in charge of programs in nuclear medicine and radiation therapy. The goal is to describe the practical aspects of radiation protection including the production of x-rays, interaction of radiation with matter and biological effects of radiation at a cellular and organ level. It discusses both early and late radiation effects. There is discussion of health physics and practical information on protecting the radiographer as well as the patient. There are also short sections on nuclear medicine and radiation therapy. The book is targeted at student radiographers as well as student technologists in nuclear medicine and radiation therapy. The text is well organized with questions regarding the subjects covered in each chapter. Answers to the questions are also given. The appendix gives examples of various calculations that are used in radiography. This should be a useful book for student technologists. It is well organized and explains radiation protection concerns in a somewhat simplified but clear language that should be well understood by the intended audience.
