Fear of mathematics afflicts a large percentage of the student population, or so it seems. If you count yourself in that number, as I do, then this book is what you need as an introduction to the important 'and often required for graduation' subject of basic statistics. Whereas most statistics books start right out with heavy doses of theory and mathematics, Practical Statistics does not. Instead, it focuses on practical applications and decision making. Emphasizing statistical reasoning and analysis, the book relates statistics to everyday situations and presents a unique framework for understanding the relationships among the factors involved in making a decision using statistics. This framework or model of the statistical decision making process provides an integrating mechanism that enables a student to relate statistical theory to real-world decision making. Statistical concepts such as probability theory, measures of central tendency, and hypothesis testing, tend to make more sense to the less mathematical person, at least initially, when presented in more familiar situations, such as predicting the weather at picnics, estimating who will win an election, forecasting the demand for a product, or testing the effectiveness of a new drug. Practical problem solving is the main focus and great strength of this book and it is the main reason why everyone who wants or has to learn basic statistics should start with Practical Statistics.
