Description: This concise manual on vascular ultrasound is a revision of a earlier book by the same authors, Making Sense of Vascular Ultrasound: A Hands-On Guide (Oxford University Press, 2004).
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a rapid reference for trainees in vascular ultrasound and experienced practitioners who wish to touch up their skills. There are many books on vascular ultrasound, but this is a welcome update.
Audience: The authors intend this book for trainees learning the art of vascular ultrasound and experienced practitioners. It is also a valuable resource for trainees and practitioners of vascular surgery, vascular medicine, and diagnostic/interventional radiology.
Features: This book covers the basics of vascular anatomy and physiology, the physics of vascular physiology and ultrasound technology, how to perform vascular ultrasound exams, and relevant details of vascular disease processes that this modality studies. Later sections, which focus on specific vascular beds, include excellent diagrams depicting relevant anatomy, followed by examples of vascular images and key technical points, pitfalls, and tips for performing and interpreting vascular ultrasound. Each chapter has a section titled "What doctors need to know," which is helpful in reporting relevant findings and understanding the purpose behind vascular ultrasound studies. Each section has a worksheet to aid in study and assimilation of the material. One notable shortcoming is the relative lack of references. The ones that are included are relevant and accurate, but subsequent editions should include current references for the many duplex criteria listed throughout the book for the diagnosis of vascular disease (i.e. carotid stenosis, renal and mesenteric artery stenosis, lower limb arterial stenosis, etc.).
Assessment: This is a high quality book for trainees or practitioners of vascular ultrasound, and a concise reference for anyone who uses vascular ultrasound studies in clinical practice.
