Briggs is a ridiculously suspicious character. Come on, already; our heroine had been through more than Briggs had, and more recently. She managed to trust and love, so what was his problem? He had every situation to see that this was a good woman, who wouldn't give up on making the best of things, and he still didn't trust her to stay? I hated Briggs, because he was so callous and self centered and mistrusting, even after the heroine is injured physically and repeatedly emotionally because of him. I gave it three stars because I liked the heroine and the setting was the most amazingly realistic portrayal of pioneer life I've ever read or even heard of. As much as I hated Briggs, I would read this book again in a heartbeat for the way the author really shows how life was in that time period. I have never read anything that immerses you into the pioneer reality like this. You can feel what the days and nights would be like in a sod house. The author must have really immersed herself in her research to come up with this, and be able to visualize herself in a pioneer reality. Sorry, I hated the hero, but an awesome setting and incredible way the author has of pulling the reader in the scene. I would like to read more realistic prairie portrayals by this author, as long as I get to read about a different hero that is capable of trust and love. I don't TRUST Briggs to be able to maintain any kind of a trusting or loving relationship.

Briggs and Sarah have baggage up the yin yang.................................................................................. Fortunately they straighten it out. I found Briggs a little to hard nosed for my taste. You would have to be desperate to put up with him. But it was a decent story.

Julianne MacLean's book is a wonderful historical romance. Her story is an incredibly well written tale of a woman on the run who becomes a mail order bride. The way the story is written, you just have to keep turning those pages! Great Job Julianne! Can't wait for your next novel.
