    A glimpse of the future

McQuiston's work in this small book is remarkably both intimate and universal. In re-imaging familiar passages from the Book of Common Prayer and familiar forms of service, he has created not only a devotional for himself and others, but a lens through which intelligent people of faith may glimpse a vital and cogent emerging Christianity. He gives voice to the private translation that many church-going believers perform on a weekly basis as they attend worship and participate in liturgies steeped in images that no longer speak to their understanding and experience. The language of his devotion is fresh, insightful, provocative, and accessible. His metaphors are drawn primarily from scripture and, as he himself indicates, are surprisingly, reassuringly orthodox. He draws on the deep tradition of 'original blessing' and creational spirituality that has sustained Christian mysticism for nearly two thousand years. His and Marcus Borg's explanations of the 'dis-connect' of supernatural theism with our modern world view and the reconnection offered by a 'panentheistic' understanding are clear, concise, and convincing. Taken together, Borg's forward and 'two week devotional' are a powerful and energizing experience and a hopeful glimpse of Christianity's emerging future.
