For many, the ultimate expression of spirituality is charity. And for years, people have been crafting prayer shawls - knitted wraps to comfort those in times of need and to help others celebrate special occasions. Written by the two women at the heart of this groundswell of charity knitting, The Prayer Shawl Companion presents 38 wondrous wraps for all occasions, from baptism to remembrance. Since knitting itself can be a gloriously spiritual activity, Bristow and Cole-Galo also offer advice on creating a peaceful creative environment and include heartwarming stories to and from shawl recipients. Professional knitwear designers like Kaffe Fassett and Nicky Epstein have donated more than 10 patterns.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Prayer shawls are a popular charity project, and this book is the first collection of patterns for these symbols of comfort. Bristow and Cole-Galo, the founders of shawlministry.com, present 38 patterns for prayer shawls, the majority of which are simple enough for knitters of any skill level to make and easily customizable. Stories from prayer-shawl knitters and recipients help demonstrate how meaningful these simple gifts can be to those in need. The focus of the nondenominational book is on knitting with intention, and the introduction explains what prayer shawls are and how they are imbued with the love and prayers of their creator. Recommended for public libraries.

An Inspirational Gift for Knitters and Non-Knitters.

This book is for anyone in a life transition: illness, birth/adoption of a child, wedding, caregiver, bar or bat mitzvah or any other celebration of life!! This is filled with awe-inspiring photography of the shawls/stoles/tallis and lap robes. The prayers and magnificent stories are uplifting and inspirational. There is a reverence for people, life and the Creator in the selection and assembly of the materials for this book. And if you love to knit, the patterns are breath-taking. Don't be intimidated, though, all skill levels are in this masterpiece.

great shawl ideas from individual knitters

love that the shawls are designs from different knitters from all around the country with a story and a photo from each person.
each shawl is rated for level of difficulty.
There is, however, a printing error in my book which I intend to report to the publisher; they have used the same photo and description for more than one shawl so the information at that point in the book is not reliable.
still, for me, the book is a keeper. hint: just copy the directions and carry that piece of paper with you as your guide and leave the book on the shelf for next time.

    Watch for errors!

I bought this book for my sister and she loved it -- until she started to make one of the shawls. Frustrsted, she called a friend, who told her that the instructions for her shawl were wrong. This led to a call to the publisher who acknowledged the error and sent her new instructions. I don't know if ther are other errors, and hopefully this one (and others?) will be corrected in a future edition. So...before you start one of these projects, call the publisher and see it there are any corrections for that pattern. If not for this error, this would get a higher rating. It's a beautifully done book.

    I Also Recommend:

For new knitters as well as experts

I'm new to knitting. The projects range in ability level. A beginner like me has as much to work on as an experienced knitter. I have The Prayer Shawl Ministry Volumes 1 and 2 as well. Between the three books, especially The Companion, I'll be able to make gifts of love and prayer for family, friends and strangers for years. The prayers and stories are touching and inspiring.

Must have for any PSM or Knitting Group

This first book from the co-founders of the Prayer Shawl Ministry is great. There are wonderful stories, great patterns, not to mention a good read for any knitter. This is a must have for any Prayer Shawl Ministry and better than any other book entitle "Prayer Shawl Ministry," "Shawl Ministry," or other combination of similar words. I plan to add this book to my Prayer Shawl Ministry's Library at church.

Great for all levels of experience!

This was a great value. I'm a novice in this area, and I found the pictures and instructions to be quite user-friendly. I've already shared this book with a number of other interested knitters and their comments have been positive as well. The sidebars also added value to the item, especially the inspirational comments and prayers.

    Corrections

I found the corrections for the errors that others mentioned on the authors' website.
I bought two of these. One for my library, and one to loan out to our knitters. I had no idea how wonderful this was. I had heard about it recently and started a group at our company where an employee has become seriously Ill. This book will enhance our project beyond what we ever imagined.

    Inspiring and encouraging!

I bought this for my church's Prayer Shawl Ministry library. I have not seen it since. All of the ladies have been looking for a variety of new styles to knit for our stashof shawls for our church. It is a beautiful book and full of inspiration and stories that support what we do and why we do it.

    Moving

I love the patterns and stories. The patterns are easy to understand and very pretty. Most are quick to knit because of big needles.

    Pray is Powerful

After looking through this book when I was in the store I reazlied that its great to knit or crochet a shawl for someone or even a stranger. This book offers a good choice of shawls for you to be creative and to knit for someone. While we knit we seem to be in a meditation state and we have our thoughts go out to solve so many things and to relax. Knitting is essential if you want to let go of stress and be creative too. I'm currently making a shawl from this book for a friend and while knitting I'm saying the pray that they suggest as well as some of my own. I recommend this book to make shawls for a lot of folks because this has now inspired me to make it for people in hospitals and homes who need to wrap up in love and positive emotions. You can do so much for someone else by making a shawl. I highly recommend this book!
