Overview

The daily meditations in Prayer Steps to Serenity: Daily Quiet Time Edition will help you enjoy each day with a peaceful spirit, so you can bring positive changes into your life. The sixty short meditations can by read in sixty days. On the other hand, you may prefer to read one meditation in the morning and another in the evening. Read the meditations in the order in which they appear, for they do follow a progressive and logical plan to help you grow mentally and spiritually. I encourage you to read this book everyday, and then quietly think about the teachings in that day’s reading. Through daily prayer steps, God will enable you to:

Quiet your mind and emotions to enjoy inner peace
Think about your real needs and how to meet them
Manage your life in ways that will lead to lasting happiness
Talk to God and others easily, effectively and enjoyably
Mend broken relationships and restore shattered dreams
Dream new dreams and achieve new purposes

Practicing a daily “Quiet Time” will enable you to spend more time alone with God. At the end of each reading, spend some time with God in prayer. Listen to God as He speaks to you through His word. Talk to God about your needs and problems. Ask God to show you His will for your life. Commit your day and plans to God. Ask God to give you His power for that day.

More specifically, these suggestions will help you make the most of your “Quiet Time.” Read the Scripture—then pause. Close your eyes. Ask God to tell you what He wants you to learn from His word. God will probably not speak to you directly and audibly. However, ask yourself, “What does this scripture reading mean to me?” God will help you think through the meaning and apply it to your life. After you have read the scripture and prayed, read the meditation. After you read the meditation, take a few quiet moments to ask yourself, “What is God saying to me in this meditation?” Read the scripture verse again and seek the answer. Ask, “What is the most important idea I have learned from this reading today?” Think about how you can make your day better by applying what you have learned from prayer and reading. Write your prayers or answer the questions or record your thoughts in the white space below each reading. Close the book.

Quietly talk to God about those things you think are most important for your life and for the day ahead. If you read your meditation in the evening, ask God to show you what He wants you to do the next day. Pray for God to give you the courage, wisdom and power to do what He says according to His word. Talk to God in your own words, trusting the Holy Spirit to lead you in prayer. Take time to write down your requests to God; then write down His answers so you can know when God answers you and you can thank God for the answers.
Prayer Steps to Serenity: Daily Quiet Time Edition includes many of the foundational biblical and spiritual principles published in Prayer Steps to Serenity: The Twelve Steps Journey: New Serenity Prayer Edition. The Daily Quiet Time Edition omits the prayers, the Serenity Prayer meditations, the Twelve Steps Recovery Program, and the personal and group Journey Guides that make Prayer Steps to Serenity: The Twelve Steps Journey a helpful book of daily readings and workbook for those working the Twelve Steps to overcome addictions, compulsions or others weaknesses.

If you enjoy the devotional readings in the Daily Quiet Time Edition, recommend Prayer Steps to Serenity: The Twelve Steps Journey to those working (or needing to work) any 12 Steps Program. The Daily Quiet Time Edition may introduce someone in denial to the 12 Steps in a nonthreatening format or be used for a Bible Study in your home or church. Since the publication of Prayer Steps to Serenity: Daily Quiet Time Edition, Donna Newton has written a new workbook to accompany it, Prayer Steps to Serenity Daily Quiet Time Workbook and Journal (Large Print Edition). Her book can be used by various study groups as well as individuals.
