Overview

The Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group founded in London in 1848, is considered by many the first avant-garde movement in art. The young artists rejected the prevailing artistic theories of their day in favour of a personal, in their eyes spiritual and more emphatically naturalistic approach. Fascinated by the motifs of medieval art and the vivid, jewel-like colours of 15th century Italian painting the movement abhorred the Classical poses and compositions of Raphael and his followers. The impact of the Pre-Raphaelites was widely felt: the ornamental dimension of their works anticipated the style of Art Nouveau, and Rossetti in particular made an important contribution to European Symbolism. This book examines the emergence, development and disbanding of the group, as well as its enduring influence.
