Overview

Prudence Sarn is a wild, passionate girl who was born during the Battle of Waterloo in the rugged countryside of Shropshire. Her "sweet bane" is a hare lip. Also, she is cursed for it by the superstitious people she resides with. Prue has two things she adores: the isolated region where she was born and the weaver Kester Woodseaves. The story of how Prue's brother, Gideon, a determined man who is out of tune with nature, plays a tragic role as Woodseaves learns to recognise Prue's true beauty.

About the Author

Mary Gladys Webb (1881-1927) was an English romance novelist and poet of the early 20th century, whose work is set chiefly in the Shropshire countryside and among Shropshire characters and people whom she knew. Her novels have been successfully dramatized, most notably the film Gone to Earth in 1950 by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger based on the novel of the same title. The novels are thought to have inspired the famous parody Cold Comfort Farm (1932) by Stella Gibbons.
