Overview

Thomas A. Dorsey is the father of gospel music, pure and simple. After turning his back on a successful career in the blues, Dorsey wrote many of the most important and enduring songs of inspiration. PRECIOUS LORD is a wonderful collection of his best-known songs recorded in 1973 by singers who are gospel superstars in their own right. The Dixie Hummingbirds, one of the best vocal groups in the history of gospel, offer jubilee takes on "I'm Waiting for Jesus" and the rousing "Hide Me in Thy Bosom." Bessie Griffin lends her raw alto to "Search Me Lord," laid down by a funky organ and guitar that belie Dorsey's past as the blues great Georgia Tom. "(There'll Be) Peace in the Valley," the song that was a hit for both Red Foley and Elvis Presley, gets a jumping treatment by R. H. Harris. The vocal center of the album, however, is the great shouter Marion Williams. The breathtaking soprano lends her voice to five cuts, delivering Dorsey's landmark "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" with enough fervor to make the seated stand and the standing kneel. These are the songs that define gospel, as much now as when Dorsey wrote them. PRECIOUS LORD is the ideal introduction to Dorsey, as well as to this daunting group of performers. Boasting beautiful production and clocking in at more than 75 minutes, this disc should be a part of every collection. Karl Hagstrom Miller
