Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-A clearly written, solidly organized overview of prehistoric Native Americans. After an introductory discussion of archaeology and the techniques used to study artifacts, Childress traces the Paleo-Indians' trek across Beringia and their dispersion into different regional and cultural groups. She describes what is known about sustenance, housing, utensils, weapons, and customs. The text is accessible, and words defined in the brief glossary are italicized in the text. With two or three exceptions, the black-and-white photographs and maps are well placed with informative captions. The index is thorough and useful. However, documentation is incomplete; two direct quotes are not attributed to their sources, supporting information for some of the author's statements is lacking, and there is no bibliography. This title is suitable for reports. Students could also be guided to Helen Roney Sattler's The Earliest Americans (Houghton, 1993), which builds on Childress's fundamental premises.-Donna L.
