Accompanying data files eliminate unnecessary typing.
  • Illustrations. Multiple illustrations add visual appeal and reinforce learning in each skill set. Each time a new button is introduced, its icon displays in the margin. Screen shots display after key steps for you tocheck against the results on your monitor. These figures, with ample callouts, make it easy to check your progress.
  • Notes. Skills include three types of notes: If you have problems, Alternate Ways, and In Depth. These notes describe common problems, explain different methods for performing tasks, and provide extra tips and special hints (details provided in "How to Use This Book"). You may safely ignore these for the moment to focus on the main task at hand, or you may pause to learn and appreciate the additional information.
  • Summary. A summary precedes the end-of-chapter exercises. The summary provides a brief recap of tasks learned in the skill set.
  • End-of-Chapter Exercises. Check out the extensive end-of-chapter exercises—at least one for each skill presented in the skill set. You'll find two levels of reinforcement: Skill Drill and Challenge (detail provided in "How to Use This Book"). Generally, each exercise is independent of other exercises, so you can complete your choices in any order. Accompanying data files eliminate unnecessary typing.

How to Use This Book

Each MOUS Prep book is organized by chapters-one chapter per core or expert skill set. A skill set consists of numbered skill areas that are related to that topic. Each skill within a numbered skill area presents a specific task or closely related set of tasks in a manageable chunk that is easy to assimilate and retain.

Each element in a MOUS Prep book is designed to maximize your learning experience. Following is a list of the MOUS Prep skill set elements and a description of how each element can help you:

  • Skill Set Objectives. Starting with an objective gives you short-term, attainable goals. Using skill set objectives that closely match the titles of the step-by-step tutorials breaks down the possibly overwhelming prospect of learning several new features of an Office XP application into small, attainable, bite-sized tasks. Look over the objectives on the opening page of a chapter before you begin, and review them after completing the chapter to identify the main goals for each MOUS skill set.
  • Key Terms. Each key term is defined during its first use within the text, and is shown in bold italic within that explanation. Definitions of key terms are also included in the Glossary.
  • Skill Set Overview. This opening section explains the concepts and features that you will learn in the skill set.
  • If You Have Problems... These short troubleshooting notes appear between hands-on steps. They help you anticipate or solve common problems quickly and effectively. Even if you do not encounter the problem at this time, make a mental note of it so that you know where to look when you (or others) have difficulty.
  • Alternate Way. These notes explain a different way to perform a task. Relatively short notes display between hands-on steps or in the margin next to the associated hands-on step. Longer notes display immediately after the associated set of hands-on steps.
  • In Depth. Many skills include "in Depth" comments. These notes provide extra tips and special hints, and they follow the related set of hands-on steps.
  • Periodic Cross-Reference to Related Exercises. MOUS skill sets include from two to ten numbered skill areas. Therefore, some of the chapters in a text are quite long. After each numbered skill area, you find a cross reference to any Skill Drill and/or Challenge exercises) relating to that numbered skill area. For immediate reinforcement, work through one or more of the related exercises. Otherwise, you can continue to the next skill area.
  • Skill Drill Exercises. Skill Drill exercises reinforce skills presented in the chapter. Each skill reinforced is the same, or nearly the same, as a skill presented within a skill set. Each exercise includes a brief narrative introduction, followed by detailed instructions in a step-by-step format.
  • Challenge Exercises. Challenge exercises expand on or are somewhat related to skills presented in the chapter. Each exercise provides a brief narrative introduction, followed by instructions in a numbered-step format that are not as detailed as those in the Skill Drill section.

Typeface Conventions Used in This Book

Prentice Hall Test Prep uses the following conventions to make it easier for you to understand the material.

  • Key terms appear in italic and bold the first time they are defined in a skill set.
  • Monospace type appears frequently and looks like this. It is used to indicate text that you are instructed to key in.
  • Italic text indicates (1) text that appears onscreen as warnings, confirmations, or general information; (2) the name of a file to be used in a skill or exercise; and (3) text from a dialog box that is referenced within a sentence, when that sentence might appear awkward if the dialog box text were not set off.
  • Hotkeys are indicated by underline. Hotkeys are the underlined letters in menus, toolbars, and dialog boxes that activate commands and options, and are a quick way to choose frequently used commands and options. Hotkeys look like this: File, Save.

The Web site that accompanies this book is the tool that empowers you to get the most out of this text (see Figure I. I ). It provides access to all the data files for you to use as you work through the step-by-step tutorials, and the Skill Drill and Challenge exercises provided at the end of each skill set.

Accessing Student Data Files on the Companion Website
The student data files that you need to work through the skill sets can be downloaded. Data files are provided for each chapter. The filenames correspond to the filenames called for in this book. The files are named in the following manner: The first character indicates the book series (M=MOUS); the second character denotes the application (W=Word, E=Excel, and so forth); and the third character indicates the level (C=Core or Comprehensive and E=Expert). The last four digits indicate the skill set number and the file number within the skill set. For example, the complete name for the first file in Chapter 3 (Core Skill Set 3) in the MOUS Word book is MWCS301. The complete name for the third file in Chapter 14 (Expert Skill Set 7) in the MOUS Excel book is MEE-S703.
