Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Erika Clark
Joshua shows that he cares by holding the door open for those who may need help. Instead of being an instigator and/or by-stander, Tim prevents his peers from engaging in an altercation. Whether Nathan is sharing his belongings with his best friend or Emily and Krista are inviting the new student in school to have lunch with them, Small uses practical examples to demonstrate how students can be caring towards others. "When you care about people, it matters to you what happens to them. You want them to be safe and happy. When they are sad or angry or frightened, you want to help." This text is a good way to help students understand the different ways in which they can help others. Similar to illustrations in Ser honesto by Jill Lynn Donahue, Previn uses the same artistic brush strokes to blend basic colors together in a unique way. Teachers can use this text and illustrations to teach struggling students how to use clues from the pictures in order to make meaning of the text. Ultimately, dual language teachers can teach students basic grammatical points in the target language, such as reflexive verbs and the subjunctive.
