As co-founder and editor of that journal, Henry Mattox addressed contemporary issues, expressing opinions and judgments and recounting experiences drawn from his service as a career Foreign Service officer and, later, as a senior lecturer in American and diplomatic history.

The Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training has included the book in its Memoirs and Occasional Papers Series.

About the Author

Retired American diplomat and university lecturer Henry E. Mattox served in the U.S. Foreign Service (1957–80) at the Department of State and seven posts abroad: Paris, Ponta Delgada, São Paulo, Kathmandu, Portau- Prince, London, and Cairo. After retiring, he spent a year in Nigeria as a Fulbright senior lecturer and taught for 15 years at North Carolina State University. From 1996 to 2007, he edited American Diplomacy, the online journal which he co-founded. Mattox holds a PhD in American history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has published four books and numerous scholarly articles.
