Editorial Reviews

Magazine of History and Biography
Andrew Jackson, as the seventh president of the United States, from 1829 to 1837, has long been considered one of the best half dozen or so of all American presidents. This interesting and insightful review of the major events of Jackson's presidency can be read for profit and entertainment by student and general reader alike.
American Historical Review
The best account of the presidency of Andrew Jackson, distinguished for its erudition, lucidity, fairness, and balance.
TLS
Cole nimbly and authoritatively traverses one of the most exciting, dynamic, and colourful administrations in American history. Thoroughly researched, original in conception, imaginatively probing in analysis, and fascinating in detail.
Journal of Southern History
The Old Hickory that emerges from the pages of this volume is a different Jackson from the traditional, almost mythic figure, a man less sure of himself than imagined, a man more controlled by the political and economic forces of his age than the reverse.
Library Journal
Although Andrew Jackson is often portrayed as dominating the momentous events of his presidency, Cole describes him as unsure of himself and ``controlled by the political and economic forces of the age rather than the reverse.'' His problems stemmed from his cabinet (chosen on a basis of loyalty, not ability), the complex political situation of the time, and his failure to understand the revolution going on in the marketplace. By tracing the major and minor events of his presidency, Cole (Phillips Exeter Acad.) shows Jackson's growth as president: ``With his strengths, passions, . . . and anxiety,'' Jackson symbolized the ambivalence of the American people. This book provides new insights into Jackson's presidency and allows the reader to see both the strengths and weaknesses of the man. Both specialists and general readers will find much of value in this work.-- Richard Hedlund, Ashland Community Coll., Ky .
Booknews
The American Presidency Series presents historians and the general reading public with interpretive surveys of the various presidential administrations. In the present volume, Cole presents a Jackson different from the characteristic bigger-than-life portrayals--a man less sure of himself than imagined, a man more controlled by the political and economic forces of his age than the reverse.
