Overview

Presidential Campaigns, Slogans, Issues, and Platforms: The Complete Encyclopedia is an easy-to-use reference work designed to encourage students and anyone interested in democratic politics to undertake a greater understanding of this complex aspect of American political life.

The three-volume work covers each presidential campaign in depth, examining a large number of related issues ranging from the use of social media in modern presidential campaigns to negative campaign ads and key slogans used in every presidential campaign. Volume One contains entries offering specific and focused information on issues, trends, factors, slogans, strategies, and other more detailed elements of presidential campaigning from the first stirrings of the American democratic process to the first decade of the 21st century. Volumes Two and Three provide chronological accounts of every presidential campaign since the ratification of the Constitution through the campaign of 2008, with Volume Two covering the campaign of 1788–89 to the campaign of 1908, and Volume Three covering the campaign of 1912 to the campaign of 2008.

Choice

"This work reminds us that presidential campaigns are fundamentally about the act of persuasion and marketing of easily digestible ideas for public consumption. The encyclopedia also reminds the reader that this has always been true; only the modes of delivery have changed. For these reasons, this work is highly recommended."

Library Journal
The first volume of this largely objective work offers alphabetically arranged articles on "Slogans, Issues, Programs, Personalities and Strategies," the bulk of which cover topics such as "NASCAR Dad," "Soccer Mom," "I Like Ike," and "Fireside Chat." Also provided there are a "Timeline of Campaigns and Significant Moments," a subject guide with headings such as "Disputed Elections" (such as the 2000 campaign) and "Elections of Notable Cultural Importance." Most major historical figures are not listed in this first volume; they are found in the other two books, which offer chronologically arranged entries on campaigns from 1788–89 to 1908 and from 1912 to 2008. This arrangement will cause users to flip back and forth among volumes in the process of their research, and the biographical information is sparse. However, the campaign coverage is thorough and easy to understand, running the better part of ten pages per campaign. Volume 3 also features a useful table of "Major Party Platforms Since 1840." VERDICT A comprehensive research tool for college students and other users who are interested in political history.—Beth Bland, West Allis, WI
School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up-Part one of this resource contains overviews of each campaign from 1788 to 2000. These essays will give students insight into the moods, platforms, and behind-the-scenes activities of leaders during these periods. Following this section are alphabetical entries covering significant individuals, candidates, issues, slogans, and terms from abortion to "You Never Had It So Good." These clearly written articles range in length from a paragraph to several pages. Unfortunately, occasional see references lead to dead ends. A six-page chronology begins the work, and the appendix briefly outlines the party planks since 1840 under such topics as "Economic Policies," "Foreign Affairs," and "Civil Rights and Liberties." Many of the black-and-white photographs and reproductions are either dark or lacking in contrast. The selected bibliography is fairly extensive. A handy title to own in an election year.-Karen Sutherland, Bartlett Public Library, IL Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
