Overview

Rule #1: Never fall in love.

Celeste Bradley captivated critics and readers alike with her unforgettable novel Fallen, which was nominated for the prestigious RITA Award from Romance Writers of America for Best First Book. Now, she brings us The Lover, the first book in the wildly fun, exciting, and sexy new Liar's Club series both featuring irresistible heroes who are out to steal their leading ladies hearts!

She had a secret she'd do anything to hide. Agatha Cunnington, a headstrong beauty from the country, has come to London in search of her missing brother James. The only clue she has is a cryptic letter signed The Griffin. Agatha decides to disguise herself as a respectable married woman so that she can go about the city unnoticed. But for her charade to work she needs a suitable "husband," preferably someone tall, elegant, and rakish-someone like Simon Montague Rain.

He had a secret he'd do anything to hide.
Simon Montague Rain, also known as The Magician, is a member of The Liar's Club, a renegade group of rogues and thieves in the service of the Crown. When someone begins murdering members of the undercover cabal one by one, Simon is given the mission to bring in The Griffin, one of his comrades who is suspected of betraying his brothers. Simon goes undercover and infiltrates the home of "Mrs." Agatha Applequist who he believes is the Griffin's mistress. Before Simon knows what's happened, he finds himself irresistibly drawn to Agatha's soft, feminine charms-and he is tempted beyond reason to break the first rule of The Liar's Club: never fall in love.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
What a wonderful idea! Agatha Cunnington intends to invent a husband, head for London unencumbered by chaperones and proprieties, and find her missing brother. In reality, Agatha needs a man for her plan to succeed-and the chimneysweep who just entered the room is the only logical choice. But the sweep happens to be a member of the renegade Liar's Club and a spy in service to the crown, and he is on the trail of a traitor who just might be Agatha's vanished sibling. A bold heroine with a taste for adventure and a hero worthy of her match wits and find love in this fast-paced, passionate adventure. The first volume in "The Liar's Club" series, this lively, Regency-set historical is great fun and will appeal to readers who like their historicals laced with laughter yet on the mysterious side. A delightful Regency

In 1813, Agatha Cunningham flees her home to avoid the unwanted advances of her odious neighbor, ¿Repulsive¿ Reggie Peasley and to find her missing brother James. In order to travel by herself, Agatha pretends to be married to Mortimer Applequist, an imaginary person she conveniently made up. However, her lies have caught up with her as the London ladies she recently met demand meeting her fictional spouse.
Simon ¿Rain¿ Raines heads the Liar¿s Club, a group of pickpockets and thieves who work for the King in search of French spies. He thinks his former best friend and associate James Cunningham turned traitor as he has been missing for several weeks, secret operatives have been killed, and his bank account has grown. He goes to James¿ home to encounter the man¿s mistress, a Mrs. Applequist, but garbs the disguise of a chimneysweep. Before he knows what happened, he pretends to be Mr. Applequist. As he and Agatha fall in love, Simon wonders how will she react when he arrests her lover, not knowing that James is her brother.
Regency romance fans will take immense pleasure in the first Liar¿s Club novel, a fun tale due to the outrageous antics of the intrepid heroine (sort of like a Baroness Munchausen). Simon is a delightful protagonist trying to overcome being the son of a Covent Garden whore who traded her body for meal money for them and an unknown father. This delightful winner belongs to Agatha, whose spins are clever and fabulous as she learns ¿oh what a web we weave when we first deceive¿.
Harriet Klausner

    A Must Buy

Celeste Bradley is a wonderful author. This book is very funny. Agatha is a spunky, and not a size zero. She is funny and managing. She is the mother hen type and you can't help but love her spunk. Simon is of course handsome, but he's also loyal and intelligent. He sees that Agatha is special from the start and he likes that she is curvier. Simon is so perfect (with flaws of course) and I fell in love with him immediately. This is the first in the series and once you read this one you will be dying to read the others as well as Bradley's Royal Four Quartet.

A Book to Keep and Read Again and Again!

Loved this story! A hunky hero (Simon), an endearing heroine (Agatha), great plot, plenty of suspense, mixed in with a lovely romance. Wonderful minor characters including the butler Pearson, the valet Button, and James, Agatha's brother (who is the male lead in the 3rd book of the Liars' Club). I've read the first four Liars' Club books, and they are all great! Happy Reading!!!

    Recommended

This is the first book in the well-written Liar's Club series, a thoroughly enjoyable read that will make you want more of these engaging characters. All five books in this series are recommended, consistently endearing characters, original plots and a well written storyline that never sags. Bradley's writing style is clever, insightful and just plain fun to read.

    Very Good

I thought this book was interesting and witty and had a great plot!!! As with most readers of romantic fiction, I like only quality books that give us action, romance, and one-of-a-kind characters.

I COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT

IN LOOKING FOR NEW ROMANCE AUTHORS I FOUND MS. BRADLEY. HER WRITING IS FUNNY AND STORIES WELL WRITTEN. EVEN THOUGH THIS IS A MALE MY FAIR LADY (WELL ALMOST) I HAD A HARD TIME PUTTING IT DOWN. MOST PEOPLE HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR BUT IT IS NOT OFTEN CARRIED OVER TO THIER WRITING--MS. BRADLEY'S BOOKS ARE. WOULD HAVE GIVEN A 5 IF STORY WAS TOTALLY ORIGINAL. THE RAIN IN SPAIN- KEPT PLAYING- IN MY HEAD- AS I READ- BY GOSH I GOT IT!

A book that stands out from the thick pack of Regency writers

I'm a lover of Regency romance, but lately I have been searching for something new and refreshing. I have finally found that with Celeste Bradley's newest book, THE PRETENDER. After reading the quirky, winsome characters in her first book FALLEN, I was very curious to see what she might do with this new series, a series that defies all the historical norms. Well, Ms. Bradley has really struck a nice chord in this reader. She manages to blend suspense, sex and uncanny humor into one fast paced story as she tells the tale of Agatha Applequist's quest to make a chimney sweep (one of the Liar's Club spies) into a pretend husband. I don't want to give away too much of the plot, but I can tell you this, THE PRETENDER is an enjoyable read that never faulters as we are taken from the Regency underground to the ballrooms of the ton. I have never read a book quite like this and I doubt too many authors could mimick Ms. Bradley's distinct style. But guaranteed, there will be many who will attempt to follow in her footsteps because THE PRETENDER (and I would imagine the whole upcoming series) are in a class all its own. A definate must read.
