Children's Literature
Every day, youngsters are bombarded with images in the media about what to wear, what to buy, and the things necessary to be hip and cool. Children's Literature
Every day, youngsters are bombarded with images in the media about what to wear, what to buy, and the things necessary to be hip and cool. This book will help answer questions such as who made the message, why, what might be left out, how the message gets one's attention, and how others might view the message differently. From glamour magazines that promote thin, to ads for quick solutions to physical fitness, and headlines that promise exclusive interviews with a celebrity, the author clearly points out what kids need to be aware of. He explains how airbrushing makes Kate Winslet's legs longer and skinnier, and that with digital editing, three different photos of Jennifer Aniston were used to produce one magazine cover. There are clear examples of ads with misleading information, tricks used to garner the reader's attention, and the importance of reading the fine print. This slim book with its practical advice, crisp layout, photos, glossary, Internet sites, and bibliography is excellent for one-on-one reading and would make a great introduction to a unit on media literacy. Other titles in the "Media Literacy" series discuss video games, movies, music and music videos, television, and the Internet. Reading all titles with some supplemental adult help may just make our kids savvy consumers.
