Pretty on the Inside [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
With the assistance of producers Kim Gordon and Don Fleming, Hole recorded a brutally uncompromising debut with Pretty on the Inside. The jagged white noise and buzzing guitars articulate Courtney Love's pent-up rage as well as her lyrics, and while that might make the album difficult to absorb in one sitting, it also makes it a singular achievement.

    Hole's Loud Beginning

This album is definately not for fans of Celebrity Skin type music only, coz this is Hole in 1991, and it's loud and fast. This is very energetic and it's recommeded... TEENAGE WHORE is the 1st singe, very catchy BABYDOLL is the poppiest song on here GARBADGE MAN is one of the best coz it just plain rocks SASSY is like listening to an answereing machine GOODSISTER/BADSISTER is okay MRS. JONES is better than GS/BS BERRY is my favorite along w/ Garbadge Man LOADED is an odd one :) STARBELLY is like radio jingles ... lol PRETTY ON THE INSIDE is short and is ok CLOUDS is great, i love it Just a warning, this cd can get to you sometimes

    Must have for Hole fans

Although Live Through This is considered their best album, and rightly so, Pretty on the Inside is just as enduring. I'll be honest. The first time I listened to it, I wasn't really sure I liked it. But the second time I put it in my CD player, it stayed in for about a week. It has an addicting sound, and compelling lyrics that, while being completely different from Live Through This, made me remember why I loved Hole in the first place.

    Hole: the raw beginning

The CD cover is eyecatching and the music is well... something else. The lyrics sound like Courtney made them up as she went along. Which she probably did, (they're that screwed). The music is very messy on purpose. It's true that this CD is very hard to like. What I recommend is listening to sample clips online at least once a week. Eventually you'll find a couple songs you like. I know I did. My favorite song has to be 'Garbage Man'. It's actually quite catchy and I love how the song builds and builds until she screams 'hey where the **** were you went my lights went.... OUT?!!!' Another favorite song of mine is Starbelly. It's actually not really a song. It has all these distorted guitars with talking voices, and an answering machine with clips of 'Rhiannon' and 'Best Sunday Dress'. Cool. Other standouts include the title track (which has some sort of feminism undertone in it) and the cover of 'Clouds'. 'Teenage Whore' and 'Sassy' are also good. The rest though, I don't care for. I mean it's alright but it's not great. 'Babydoll' and 'Mrs. Jones' practically sound like the same song. So the moral of the story is to give 'Pretty On The Inside' some time. It's not Hole's best but it's the sound of a great band in the making.

    not for the "pop" listeners

this album was hole's first, when i heard it, it completely blew my mind. it doesn't make any sense at first, but once you get past all of courtney's perfectly placed screams and you listen to the words, you'll see that they convey exactly what want to perfectly. this one is a little more hardcore than "live through this" and "celebrity skin" both are great but this one has something the others don't. it has raw emotion that bleeds through every lyric. i wasn't into it until i heard "sassy" and through all the guitar riffs and the amps exploding i heard what they were saying, (they weren't saying anything really) but they didn't have to. if you're into the whole GC and simple plan, then its not for you. hole aren't posers, and if your trying to be cool by listening to them when you really want some good ole Britney or Xtina then i feel sorry for you. Hole is for the people who really do understand it, its real grunge. it rocks.
