Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
Penny is a stylish young lady who wears designer boots and carries a pink shoulder bag. Her best friend is Emma. Iggy, a lazy pig and a sneaky cat, Bo, are her pets. Penny has lots of ideas and, since this title is a sequel to Pretty Penny Sets Up Shop, it's helpful for the reader to know that the stories focus on establishing a healthy relationship with money at an early age. Penny is first introduced to readers as wanting to throw a birthday party for her grandmother. Having no money, she cleans and sets up shop in her grandma's attic with the idea of creating a "Small Mall." Being industrious and creative, she begins selling the items in the attic to earn money for grandma's surprise celebration. In this sequel, Penny's friend, Emma, wants to buy a ticket for a concert but finds she has spent all her allowance money. All of it. Penny, of course, wants to help and comes to the rescue with another of her ideas. If you love furry, four-legged pets, you will love Penny's newest endeavor. She certainly has a knack for making and saving pennies. Most parents will agree it is tough to teach kids about money. The author, believing that children can avoid trouble by learning financial basics early, also introduces the Pretty Penny Saving Setup, a money management tool easy enough for young children to understand. For each dollar Penny earns, she allots some for charitable causes, some for her long-term savings and the remainder for her every day expenses. A third title in the series, Pretty Penny Comes Up Short, is also available. Visit myprettypenny.com for projects, printable greeting cards, desktop wallpaper and icons. Saving and spending responsibly is clearly the message in this book. Happy saving! Reviewer: Suzanne Javid

K-Gr 3—This message-driven book delivers a pleasing-enough story, though its main attraction is the financial advice it dispenses. Penny, introduced in Kinch's Pretty Penny Sets Up Shop (Random, 2010), is a spunky girl with entrepreneurial talents. When her friend Emma has no money to purchase a Sassy Pants concert ticket, Penny has an "aha" moment. The girls will open La Perfect Pup Salon, a grooming enterprise that brings in $30, more than enough for Penny to demonstrate the effectiveness of what she calls the Pretty Penny Saving Setup. Sweet cartoon characters dressed in jewel-tone fashions; irresistible puppies; and rooms filled with girlie paraphernalia make it easy to see which patrons will gravitate toward this book. Although it is gender specific, the idea of keeping track of one's money and designating some for saving, some for sharing, and some for spending is prudent. This title could go a long way toward establishing good personal finance practices.—Gloria Koster, West School, New Canaan, CT
