Overview

Folks say I'm reckless. I suppose loading a Texas Ranger in the ass with buckshot in my fit of jealousy earned me more scrutiny than the preacher’s wife at a Sunday potluck.

Now I work as a deputy, and the pistol on my hip is registered. I’m finally moving past all the tongue wagging about my youthful escapades. That is until Gunner Wilson, the object of said target practice, struts his cowboy boots back into town. Now he keeps showing up everywhere with that sexy grin of his.

All I want to do is solve this latest case then kick the cocky, tattooed lawman to the curb. But Gunner has gotten under my skin. And hell, that’s a problem, because I’ve made a new life in Pistol Rock, one that doesn’t include my hotter than hell ex-boyfriend. Except now I need his help…and asking a favor from Gunner might cost me more than just a pair of panties…

With Pretty Reckless, new to me author Jodi Linton introduces the reader to a feisty spitfire named Laney Briggs, a former school teacher turned Sheriff's Deputy in the small town of Pistol Rock, Texas. Murder isn't something that happens in this tiny little town so when Laney finds herself investigating her first murder case, she crosses paths with old flame, Gunner Wilson, a Texas Ranger whose relationship with Laney ended with a shotgun loaded with rock salt. Laney is now engaged to the local veterinarian and though she insists long and loud that she loves her fiancé, Gunner is determined to kick up a little dust over her shiny red cowboy boots. This book was a lot of fun to read. I really liked Laney and Gunner together. Their chemistry and feelings were very evident though Laney trys very hard to fight it. Gunner is a pure rascal to the bone but you have to admire his tenacity. He's not a perfect hero and he is no innocent bystander. Some would even say that receiving an ass full of rock salt was the least he deserved. Once he arrives in Pistol Rock, he is like the proverbial moth to Laney's bright flame. He can't stay away and doesn't seem to care if he will get burned. What initially appears as a run of the mill murder investigation quickly turns sinister when Laney starts receiving threats from an unknown source and more dead bodies start showing up. The story moves at a very good pace and the author does an excellent job of describing the scenes with such clarity and detail, the reader is able to feel what Laney feels, all the way down to the dry dusty Texas landscape. I was able to guess early on who the true villains in the story are but what I was not expecting was the final show-down which had some intense nail-biting moments. My Final Verdict: This is a very good start to a series that packs a punch. If you like your heroes to wear Stetsons and boots with a "Howdy Ya'll" drawl that will make your toes tingle, then Pretty Reckless will fit the bill. Turn up the A/C, pour yourself an iced glass of sweet tea, turn off the phone and get ready to be thoroughly entertained. Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of Pretty Reckless from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I received a copy to read and review for Wicked Reads, so here is my review. We start out with Deputy Laney Briggs from Pistol Rock Texas where the cowboys are hotter than the Texas heat. When Laney get the call to go the to feuding families, a modern day Hatfield's & McCoy's, she gets more than an argument. She finds a dead body along with some dead cattle. She has to find out who or what did the killing. With her fiance Nathan being the local vet and a wedding on the horizon. She doesn't need the Texas Ranger from her past. When Ranger Gunner Wilson shows up, Laney still hates him for what happened between them but her bodies reaction is what she has to control. I thought this was a great story with loads of sexy cowboys, total red-neck sheriff and deputy and a killer on the loose. Will Laney figure out who is killing people? Will she stay with Nathan or will she let Gunner back into her heart even though she can't trust him? If you are looking for a great story that will keep you guessing and laughing, then you should read this one. This is a first for me from Jodi Linton and I can't wait for more in this series.  **Wicked Reads Review Team**

4 star I was pulled right into this story. The story flowed well and I was kept interested. The story has laughs, suspense, and heartbreak. Laney was with Gunner until she found him in bed with another woman. She is now deputy sheriff and engaged to the town veterinary. She has moved on and nothing Gunner does will change that. If only she can get her heart and head to believe that. Gunner is back in town to help with a case but while he is here he is going to win Laney back. At any cost. Seems like someone has it out for Laney and is stalking her. Can Gunner and Laney solve the case before both of them drown in the chemistry? Or will the stalker get to Laney and take her from Gunner. Laney was strong and sweet. Gunner was hot, sexy, and alpha. Lots of suspense with some twists and turns mixed in. All in all I felt I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read. I recommend this book.

Jodi Linton is a newcomer to the romance world and Pretty Reckless is a standout. Told in first person from Laney Briggs’ point of view, the book contains all the elements necessary to make it a great read, cowboys, crime and a hotter than hot hero. It’s full of humor, drama and mystery as Laney and Gunner must solve a case that has led to a string of murders in the small, dusty town of Pistol Rock as well as the mystery of their continued attraction for each other after five years apart. The first person narrative works for the tale, and is not always an easy technique to master. Definitely recommended as a fun read!
