Overview

Welcome to Pistol Rock, Texas where everyone knows secrets last about as long as the sporadic west Texas rain showers.
Laney Briggs has long been considered reckless by the denizens of her hometown, but she’s finally turned it all around—she’s happily engaged to the local veterinarian and she’s become a Pistol Rock deputy sheriff. Everything’s fine and dandy—until a dead body turns up and her ex, Texas Ranger Gunner Wilson, decides to stick his boots into the town’s first murder case.   Of course, the troublesome cowboy’s rugged good looks and T-shirt-straining muscles are already leaving Laney knee-deep in hot water, but she’ll be damned if she lets Gunner trample all over her turf. She’s decided that, instead of conflict, she wants a contented, steady life with her vet—a life in which Gunner Wilson and his seemingly endless ability to undermine her resolve and her libido plays no part. Still, it’s hard to keep her head as forbidden sparks ignite and suspicions arise between old rivals and old flames. And when the bodies start to pile up, Laney has to ask the lethal bad boy for a hand—and a truce in exchange for his help. But after uncovering the pack of lies surrounding not only her job but her heart…  Having an ex-boyfriend as an ally might not be the best idea, but it’s certainly the most reckless, and Laney has always been pretty reckless…

Meet the Author

Jodi Linton grew up across the street from a cow pasture, where she was likely to been seen
selling Kool-Aid in a Dixie cup at ten cents a pop, or inviting neighbors over to watch one of her
plays staged on her father’s Bass boat. As a voracious reader, she fell in love with mysteries,
especially ones with witty, spunky heroines—which spawned Laney Briggs, a smart-mouthed,
Small Town, Texas deputy sheriff, in constant conflict with her on-again-off-again Texas Ranger
boyfriend.

Linton lives in Texas Hill Country with her husband and two kids, and can usually be found
cozied up to her computer, escaping into a quirky world of tall tales, sexy, tight jean wearing
cowboys, and a protagonist with a sharp-tongue quick enough to hang any man out to dry.

Laney was a hot mess!  I loved her character.  Strong but vulnerable, feisty, quick witted.  I loved how she held her own.  So many scenes where I laughed at her conversations.  She was not intimidated by anyone, except maybe her momma.

Then there is Gunner.  He kept it interesting with his one liners to grab Laney's attention and let her know he was not giving up on her.  Tough guy who totally protected Laney.  Although it appeared he wronged her, he still fought to be with her.

The story was fun, sassy, full of action and suspense.  Sometimes it seemed Laney and Gunner were never going to catch a break. The suspense part of the story was good.  Kept me guessing.  I thought I had the dilemma figured out only to have something throw my mind for a loop.

This was my first book to read by Jodi Linton.  I enjoyed it and would love to see more of this series.  I did receive a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Laney has been living in the town she grew up in as a deputy sheriff. Her life is good, she is engaged to a local veterinarian and she is moving on with her life.

Her ex (whom she caught in their bed with another woman) just happen to show up after she finds her first murder victim. All of a sudden Laney's life was upside down. She is fighting feelings for Gunner, investigating a web of lies, deceit, and drugs. She is trying to convince herself that her fiance is the right man for her all while someone is threatening her and trying to kill her.

There are 3 cowboys vying for Laney's attention and she just doesn't know where to go or who is involved.

The author keeps this book very suspenseful and wants you to turn the page. I had a hard time putting this book down and finished it in 2 nights after work. If you are looking for a good romance book with some suspense/mystery thrown in you have found it.

I was given a copy of this book for my honest review.

I thought this was a great book. Deputy Laney Briggs is a character you will fall in love with. I don't think I have ever heard anyone talk like her. “Maybe it was bad luck or part of the good Lord’s divine plan. At any rate, I was one of the unfortunate two hundred that called Pistol Rock, Texas home."

This book was not only filled with funny quotes but it had action, love, mystery and suspense to boot! Get it to boot?

The story started off a little slow but quickly accelerated. You've got good old gun fights to dead cows, and lets not forget, dead bodies!

When her ex comes back to town it just throws the story into a whole lot of twists and turns. She has a man and they plan to get married and Gunner wants her back. I can relate with Laney's relationship with her momma. As Laney says, "Weddings have a tendency to bring out the crazies, and my mother had a VIP card to the club."

I thing I really liked about Laney is she's as strong as she needs to be. She's smart and brave, and loyal to her friends. This was truly a great book to read and I am looking forward to the next in this series.

Laney Briggs find herself smack-dab in the middle of some crazy situations that are outrageous, humorous, and entertaining to the reader. She is a cute and sassy, yet tough and endearing. I also think most women will find her easy to identify with. Especially when her ex, Gunner, blows back into town, determined to win back Laney's affections. He's definitely charming and positively sexy, which kept me rooting for him to get back in her good graces.

This book had all the makings of a terrific romantic mystery: danger, humor, sexual tension...and let's not forget the other hot cowboys in the book. Jodi Linton introduced a well-rounded cast of characters that she brought to life on every page. Obviously, she comes by her humor naturally.

If you're looking for a read with delicious cowboys, fun banter, an intriguing mystery, and a generous helping of humor, then you've just found it. I enjoyed PRETTY RECKLESS thoroughly and can't wait for the next book!

When I was asked to review this novel I just couldn't wait to dive in. The whole cowboy or western thing isn't usually my cup of tea but I decided to go outside of my reading comfort zone this time. And for good reason! Did you read that summary?!? Yeah ... you and I both know that you want to know more about Gunner Wilson. Sweet baby Jesus. I'm telling you ... you want to know more about Gunner Wilson.

This is the first novel that I've read by Jodi Linton and it probably won't be the last. It was really well written ... I didn't find any boring sections, nothing long winded or anything like that. I also really liked how established the story was ... you know those kinds ... there's no warming up period, just first paragraph and BOOM! already some action going on.

That being said ... I also felt a bit overwhelmed in the beginning. There were so many characters to learn and they all played a vital part in the story. I did find myself having a hard time at first keeping up with everyone. Now, that goes away once you're fully into the story but it was a bit much at first.

I've read ... hundreds of books. I don't even know how many. Tons. A crap ton. That's more than a ton, right? Well ... because of that, I can sometimes pick out the ending to novels and movies. Strike that. Not sometimes ... most of the time. And unfortunately, that was the case with Pretty Reckless. Oh, I hoped that I was wrong during the whole novel but in the end, I wasn't. But I will say this ... I may have known the outcome of the novel but the ride to get there was pretty awesome. I'll definitely read another one by Linton in the future and I'm kinda excited to see what happens in the next installment.

Pretty Reckless by Jodi Linton is the first book in her new Deputy Laney Briggs series. We meet our heroine, Deputy Sheriff Laney Briggs immediately, as her boss Sherriff Dobbs sends her to a ranch to settle a dispute. Laney is tired of always being the one to get in the middle of ranchers constant and drunken fights; not to mention the leers and comments from the ranchers. But Laney holds her own, as she is not your simple female deputy. She is feisty, beautiful, funny, sarcastic and probably their best cop in Pistol Rock, Texas. This time the simple dispute turns deadly, with murder, mayhem, drugs making this a case that brings in the Texas Rangers.
    In this case,

Gunner Wilson, Laney’s ex, who left her a few years before, comes to Pistol Rock to help with the case. As soon as she sees Gunner, Laney can feel the immediate sparks, and knows she still has feelings for him, which she desperately tries to fight off. Laney is now engaged to Nathan, the popular local veterinarian. But it will not be easy, as Gunner is out to win back Laney, even if she shot him in the ass, when he left. ¿ Not only is Gunner a hunk, but it seems so is the local wealthy rancher Luke. Laney is not deprived of attention from Gunner, Luke and Nathan, who is becoming by day more upset with Gunner’s constant advances to his fiancée.

This is just part of the story, with the romance, Gunner and Laney; but the crux of the story is the mystery of who is behind the murder (s), and involved in the drug deals. There are quite a few twists along the way, and each time Laney and Gunner think they have a handle on things, they are back to square one. Pretty Reckless is a suspense mystery, with a lot of humor, as well as romance in between.

Laney is a pretty cool character, and Gunner is one hot Texas Ranger. There were times when it was a bit wild early on, with Laney having to do most of the investigation work with Gunner. This I thought wasn’t totally believable, since the sheriff and the other deputy did nothing. Overall this was a nice fast read, with a hot couple, not to mention a heroine who can handle all those hot men. Good start to a new series.

    Pretty Reckless is pretty amazing!

From page one, I was sucked into Laney’s world. And, folks, what a surprising world it is! Suspense, intrigue, romance… it all starts with cows turning up dead, but then, wait, there is a human body! This is only the first twist on a set of twists and turns that will take the reader into a thrilling journey.

I live in Central Texas and think the way Ms. Linton portrayed the Texan characters and the setting is flawless. The heroine, Laney Briggs, is in a class of her own! So many times they create strong heroines to match a strong hero, but in this case I feel they created Gunner to stand up to Laney. She’s smart, quick witted, sassy and very well rounded.

I've become a fan of Laney Briggs and can't wait for the next book in the series. Bravo, Ms. Linton!

It isn't often that I read a " who done it" and not know who did it with in the first chapter. The rest of the book is just seeing how it was done. But with Jodi's book I didn't know squat till the two chapter and even then she still surprised me . What a great , wonderful , sexy, funny, romantic book , Jodi has wrote! Gunner and Laney are prefect, and the cast and characters are the best. Each one has a richness about them , that you can see it all played out perfectly. Laney is a hoot and , she know how to use rock salt in the most butt slapping way ...( you will get that joke when you read the book I promise). I can't wait to read more and more about the hotter than hell Texas Ranger Gunner and the sassy deputy Laney Briggs. So go ahead and get your copy , sit back and enjoy the ride , you are going to love it and want to take it over and over again.

Have you ever heard a Laneyism such as "That wink was deadlier than a Krispy Kreme donut to a woman's
waistline" if not then you really should read this delightful romance, suspense, mystery, and sometimes coffee
sputtering humour as Deputy Laney Briggs comes out with her very own brand of humour.
Laney is a person that I would love to have as a friend, loyal and sincere and as straight shooting as they come,
life has thrown her some curve balks but she has thrown them straight back and is going along wonderfully until
Texas Ranger Gunner Wilson decides to enter her life again.
Now Gunner there's a man for you a Texas Ranger, and from the first " He'd cocked his black cowboy hat to the
side and stuffed his hands into the back pockets of tight Wranglers, stretching the black t-shirt round his big
biceps. That damm black rattlesnake rippled along the hard muscles of his right forearm..."  You are in his corner,
as the story progresses I know that my feelings went up and down as I found out their history, but the one thing
you never doubted was his love.
All the secondary characters are wonderful and add such a depth to the story and there are far too many to go
into here suffice to say that Laney has Laneyisms for most of them and I love these short pithy descriptions.
This is the first in a series and I certainly hope we get to see more of Laney and Gunner and the rest of the crew
at a Pistol Rock as this is one of the most entertaining books I've read in a while.

Pretty Reckless is the first in author Jodi Linton¿s Deputy Lane

Pretty Reckless is the first in author Jodi Linton’s Deputy Laney Briggs Series and really sets us up for what I think will be a great collection!
Sherriff’s Deputy Laney Briggs is used to the slow and somewhat boring country life in a small southern town.  She’s been able to get past a pretty hurtful breakup and is adjusting to life as the fiancée of the town’s veterinarian.  Life is pretty good.  For Small Town, USA, that is.  Things take a turn for the worse when there’s a dead body found up on one of the big local farms.  Suddenly everything is turned upside-down.  Not just because there’s clearly been a murder, but because her ex is now here working the case with her.  He’s a Texas Ranger and is assigned to help on the case.  A distraction she doesn’t need especially when this turns into a real humdinger case of who-done-it.  The murder turns out to be the tip of the iceberg and Laney uncovers a huge case of debt, drugs and deceit.  The likes she never thought she’d see in her small town.  Add working alongside her sexy as sin ex and digging up all sorts of feelings she’d like to leave behind, and this may prove to be the hardest case of Laney’s life.
Whew, talk about a mystery that had me on the edge of my seat until the end!  Laney sure had her hands full from the very beginning and with so many colorful townspeople and viable suspects; she had her work cut out for her.  That poor gal was put through the ringer in this book but I loved that she never gave up…or even thought about quitting.  One of my favorite parts of this book though was Jodi’s ability to write a small town that I truly felt a part of.  The characters were described with such great detail that I loved some of them, hated others and laughed with many of them.   I think this is a great start to the series and feel like we have a great foundation for the series to come.
Thank you , Jodi, for Pretty Reckless!  I’m looking forward to what’s in store for Laney in the future.

Cute, quirky read with a kick-ass, feisty heroine, sexy cowboys and a wild west setting.

I thought this was a good start to a new series which I understand will follow Laney Briggs, our heroine. Pretty Reckless takes places in Pistol Rock, Texas - LOL! Doesn't that name just scream wild west to you? Laney is a deputy in Pistol Rock. She's engaged to the town's veterinarian and her life seems to be "on track", until she discovers a dead body and Texas Ranger Gunner shows up to work the case with her. Unfortunately, Gunner is also her ex-fiance and things weren't exactly resolved between them.

Ghost Seer is adeptly written with funny dialogue and gripping suspense. I felt that the story dragged a bit in the middle but, looking at the other reviews, perhaps it was just me. I will definitely pick up the next entry in this series and I'm looking forward to seeing where Jodi takes this series from here.

    3 1/2 stars!

Laney has always been the wild and crazy girl in town. She has turned her life around is a deputy sheriff and engaged to a great guy. Her life should be simple an happy but it gets turned around when her ex Gunner shows back up. He is a Texas Ranger and on the trail of a drug ring. It seems to have come to the town od Pistol Rock and he is going to stop it. Now they have to work together to figure things out before more bodies turn up. Working together is bad because they still have many feelings between them and many don't want them back together.

Laney is so amazing. She is tough, doesn't back down is sexy yet she still has a few faults that make her seem so real. She is confused on her feelings and she has many thoughts run through her head that you can really connect with. Gunner is a very sexy cowboy who will do anything to stop bad guys and try to get Laney to give him another chance. He tries to make up for his past mistakes and at times he can be a smart ass but he sure does make you laugh.

Dead people, dead cows, drug dealers and so much more are in this delightful book. I was hooked from page one and wanted so much more. I am glad to see it is a series as I want more of Laney. There is tons of danger and you don't know who to trust but Laney never gives up. She keeps digging with Gunner's help to figure it out even when she is getting beat up and sometimes worse. She seems to have a great fiancé everyone thinks is so great but even h has a past. Gunner messed up years ago and Laney made him pay for it. I love how they react to each other. Gunner wants to help Laney and tries his best to show her he is the man for her. Laney is trying to be less reckless but finds it hard to do at times. Her mom and fiancé think the know what is best for her and try in many ways to run her life. She has to show everyone she may be reckless but she is also a great cop who is out to stop the bad guys. If you like a character you can really enjoy who faces down danger and has lots of spice be sure to read this one.

Jodi Linton is off to a very good start with her debut novel, Pretty Reckless. If you like stories that are set in small towns where you feel like you know the people who live there, then you will enjoy this book. This is a quirky story that includes a mystery and many mishaps. I really enjoyed the personalities of all the characters, and I’m looking forward to see what Ms. Linton has in store for Laney in her next book.

Laney Briggs is a deputy sheriff in the small Texas town of Pistol Rock. She’s engaged to the local veterinarian and things are finally looking up for her. She knows all the residents and they know her. Things have been going well for her, but if anything can go wrong, it will without fail. When a dead body turns up and she learns that her ex has come back to town she sets out to prove she can handle anything that comes her way. Right?

Gunner Wilson is a Texas Ranger, and Laney’s ex. He’s come back to Pistol Rock to follow up a lead on the case he’s been working on for a few years. He is determined to get Laney to take him back, so he’s decided to spend as much time with her as he can, why not help her with this murder case she needs to investigate. Neither one of them expected that their lives would be in danger the more the dug up.

Can Laney work with Gunner without her libido getting too heated up to give in to what he wants? Will Gunner win back the one woman he never stopped loving? You will have to read it to find out.

Laney is a sheriff ''s deputy, Gunner is a Texas Ranger.....they were a couple till he betrayed her...she's now engaged to Nathan, the local vet.. Gunner's back in town on a case and he wants her back. This is not a western or your typical murder mystery....its just set in Texas. The characters are colorful, the dialog is fast and funny. Laney is tough, competent, confused and adorable...Gunner is sexy and hot and determined. the story is fun.

I received a gift copy of this book and I have to say it was a great read. This is the story of Laney and Gunner in my opinion. They are not the only characters in the book but they stand out the most. Laney and Gunner used to have a relationship until things happened that tore them apart. Laney has tried to move on with her life she has a new career e and has even gotten engaged to Nathan the local vet. Then in comes Gunner to work a case and things get heated between them again. Laney and Gunner are working a case regarding drug trafficking and the twists and turns will have you turning the pages as fast as you possibly can. If you are looking for a great suspenseful romance to read this is the book for you.

In Pistol Rock, the cowboys are not only sizzling hot, they’re all packin’ attitude and hiding secrets to boot.  Fortunately, Pistol Rock has Deputy Laney Briggs to take them down a peg or two.

Of course the cowboy with the hottest bod and baddest attitude is Laney’s ex, Texas Ranger Gunner Wilson.  Laney wants nothing more than to boot him back out of town so she can settle down with the respectable town vet.  Unfortunately, as long as dead bodies keep turning up left and right, she’s stuck with Gunner and her inconvenient leftover feelings for him.

If you like sassy, strong heroines in red boots and packin’ plenty of bad-ass attitude, Laney Briggs is your girl. This rollicking tale is full of small-town Texas flavor and feisty humor.  I loved the oddball cast of characters and can’t wait for the next Pistol Rock story! Fun!

No spoilers! I loved this, even though I rarely read adult fiction anymore, Pretty Reckless has everything I love in a book—suspense, mystery, humor and romance, all narrated by a kick-ass heroine with a sassy, real voice and enough flaws to make you root for her by the end of the first page!
I couldn’t put this down, I had to know who was responsible for the mayhem in Pistol Rock, I had to find out how engaged Deputy Laney Briggs would handle solving small town murder with her hot, ex-cowboy—Texas Ranger Gunner Wilson, while going home at the end of the day to her veterinarian fiancé.
I highly recommend this book—plenty of humor, mystery, romance, and suspense to make you turn the pages very fast. Like I said, I couldn’t put this down! I love Laney and Gunner and I’m thrilled this is the start of a series!
