Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Charlie and Krista used to be close-good friends as well as sisters. Now Krista is pretty and popular, Charlie is a social outcast, and their past relationship is a dim memory. When a new coach persuades Charlie to go out for Krista's soccer team, their worlds collide. Along the way, Krista discovers that her best friend and her boyfriend are not so great after all, Charlie finds friends and a sense of belonging on the team, and both girls realize that being sisters is more important than all their differences. They learn to work together and listen to each other, and everyone wins. Told in the alternating voices of Charlie and Krista, this tale combines sibling rivalry, high school romance, friendship, and fitting in. Many potential layers exist in those themes, but the story remains formulaic and superficial. Readers are told, rather than shown, who the characters are and what they are feeling and doing, which makes it difficult to care about the characters on or off the field. Outdated pop culture references add to the air of staleness surrounding the story. The soccer scenes feel authentic, but they are not enough to carry the book beyond mediocrity. Despite the familiar and predictable plot, the book is a fast, accessible read with some good messages that might draw younger teens, especially girls with a taste for both realistic fiction and the soccer field.
VOYA
PrettyTough is, at first glance, stereotypical chick lit, but the conflict between Krista and Charlie, sisters who live completely different lives, gives depth to the story line as well as the characters. The choices that they make throughout the book affect everyone around them as well as their own relationship. With believable situations to which readers can relate and challenges both physical and emotional, this novel is a fun and a worthwhile read.
KLIATT
Sisters Charlie and Krista used to be close. After their lives take different directions, led in part by bullying and teasing that Charlie endures, they become pretty much each other's nemesis. Krista is everything Charlie, a surfer who finds peace and happiness in the water, thinks she herself isn't and she feels invisible when being held in comparison. Krista is smart, beautiful, popular, athletic, driven to succeed and, feeling the pressure of perfection, unsure why or when her sister became so hateful. When both Krista and Charlie make the school's soccer team, they need to find a way to not only work together, but move past some of the hate before it destroys them both. A well-paced story written with subtly alternating points of view, Tigelaar's story of sibling rivalry is not necessarily a new one, but it does offer some refreshing personalities. With snappy, witty, and sarcastic dialog and internal thoughts that ring true at appropriate moments along with character development that progresses naturally and unforced, readers will find themselves engaged, touched, and moved by this look inside a thorny relationship between two strong and complicated sisters. The sports elements balanced with those exploring the dynamics of friendship make this a title that will have broad appeal.
School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up
Sisters Krista and Charlie Brown could not be more different. Krista, the eldest, is blond, smart, pretty, and popular, and, of course, is dating a popular boy. Charlie, who endures bullying and teasing at school (not helped by her last name), prefers solitude and surfing the Malibu waves. When they are recruited for their high school soccer team, the teens have to face their differences and learn to work together. This is a well-paced book with solid character development and witty, authentic dialogue. The relationship between the siblings is both strong and complicated. With its classic themes of sisterhood and romance, the book is an updated version of Francine Pascal's "Sweet Valley High" series (Random), with a sports twist.

    Pretty Good!

I chose to read this book due to my passion for soccer. I am an avid player, too. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys playing soccer or has a passion for soccer. However, if you are under 13, I wouldn't recommend this due to some strong sexual language.

This book is one of the best!!

This book follows the life of Charlie Brown. Charlie spent most of her high school years in the shadow of her sister. One day while Charlie was surfing the new girl high school soccer coach askes her to play on the team. When her sister finds out she is not very happy. All of the players who played the past years had to try out again for the new coach. As the try outs go on Charlie finds herself making new friends and more people are starting to notice her. When they find out that both of the girls made the team they have to learn how to work together.
I think this book was a great book and I recommend this book to girls how like sports. It has a good story line and it teaches a good lesson. I think girls ages 11 and up would like this book.

    I Loved this!

OK, so lately I've had alot of other things going on in my life, similar to this book. After reading it, I valued my siblings and friends even more.It showed me that if I put my mind to something, I can do it. It's very motivational. Plus, I don't normally like to read, but I read this book in 2 days. It has a really great storyline and characters you can relate to. This is really an awesome book.

    fantastic book

I would just like everyone to know how amazing this book is, you can't put it down, it made me want to have that kind of expierience. This book is a fun read, and you'll get hooked i can promise you, that. Liz Tigelaar really put everything in her mind into a fantastic book, she couldnt have written it better, i think a sequal for that book would be fabulous, like how Krista goes onto college and how Charlie would play again. I HIGHLY recommend this book, if you love soccer, then this is perfect for you. This book is one of my favorites, KEEP IT UP!

    PRETTY TOUGH

    Pretty Tough
The book Pretty Tough, by Liz Tigelaar is an entertaining book. Two sisters Charlie and Krista almost hate each other. Charlie Brown is the outsider of the Beachwood high school hallways. Her sister Krista Brown has always been the pretty and popular girl in her school, her whole life. They'll do anything to give each other a rough time. Liz Tigelaar uses a lot of detail to describe every conflict that happened in the book.
Pretty Tough, takes place in Los Angeles, California. From the summer to the winter every character takes his turn in the spotlight at Beachwood High School. Every character in the book has an effect on each other that leads to all the scenes and conflicts in the book. Carla and Pickle are Charlie's new best friends that she hangs out with most of the time in the book. Martie and Noah are the girl's soccer team coaches. Cam is Krista's boyfriend and Brookes is Krista's self-absorbed best friend who is an actress for Hollywood.
If you think your life is "Pretty Tough", you should try reading this book. Imagine being neglected and invisible in your school. Not being talked to or even looked at and if you are, it was for a bad reason. Charlie has a hard-knock life. Her friends ditched her. Rumors are spread about her. Her sister hates her. She's the black sheep in her family. The only friend she has is her surfboard and the ocean waves, but all that changes by making one bad, but smart move.
People around the world take the people that they love for granted. Even you, but always remember to appreciate what you have because things can be worse. My sister and I argue every once in a while and sometimes we get really frustrated and annoyed by each other, but I learned that in the future she will be all I have and we will need each other. Like in the book, Charlie and Krista hate each other and maybe they should learn that when it comes to reality they are sisters and they should learn to love and respect each other.
All in all, this a great book to read. Once you start you just have to finish reading it because your eyes are so glued to the text. I love this book; it's interesting and very entertaining. I recommend this book for young adults around the age of fourteen. I also recommend this book for readers who love drama and conflict.

    AMAZING!!

I loved this book and I dont even enjoy reading. There were a lot of important messages through out the book. I developed feelings for Krista and Charlie within the first chapter. Liz Tigelaar does an excellent job expressing emotions, messages, and feelings of the characters in each chapter.

I would reccomend this book to anyone who is in the mood for an emotional rollercoaster ride, and wants an inspiration to try your hardest in everything.

Reviewed by The Compulsive Reader for TeensReadToo.com

Charlie Brown is not a team player. This is what she tells the new soccer coach when she is recruited to play soccer on her school's losing soccer team. And with a name like hers, you can't help but sympathize.

Charlie would rather surf all day than play on the same team as her perfect sister, Krista. The stereotypical It girl, Krista is blond, athletic, popular, and beautiful. Everything Charlie is not, and for that reason alone, the two hate each other.

And suddenly going out for the soccer team seems like the perfect way to spite Krista. But what neither Charlie nor Krista expected was that Charlie would actually make the team. Or that should she would stay...

PRETTY TOUGH is a novel that redefines all of those stereotypes that run deep in young adult literature. This is a novel with an empowering message: girls can be athletic, brainy, tough, and fashionable. All the while, Tigelaar gives a strong and unflinching look at how seemingly unimportant decisions can make a lasting effect, especially on those you love.

The true depths of the bonds of sisterhood are realized in this heartwarming and heart-pumping novel full of love, acceptance, drama, strength, and forgiveness.

    Pretty Tough

I read the book Pretty Tough for an assignment and let me just tell you it is a really really good book. This book has two main characters name Charlie and Krista Brown. The two main characters are sisters and they do not like each other. Charlie has been little upset with Krista and her parents from the beginning because her sister was four when Charlie was born and wanted to name her Charlie so her parents did. Charlie is angry because so doesn¿t understand why her parents would let a four year old name her Charlie Brown. Charlie is a surf girl who doesn¿t care what people think about her and Krista is the exact opposite she is popular and has the jock boyfriend and is very self conscious. Charlie and Krista¿s relationship first started to sourer when Krista did stick up for Charlie when she was being ridiculed. When Charlie tries out for Krista¿s soccer team things take a turn for the worst but at the end of the book they realize that they can¿t win the championships without each other and things start taking a turn for the better.
