Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Praise for Bluford High:
"The Bluford novels have been wildly popular with young readers across the country and continue to entice reluctant readers. . . . The books are well written, treat the problems of inner-city youth with respect, and avoid easy answers to the challenges that kids face today." --James Blasingame, Associate Professor of English Education at Arizona State University, coeditor of The ALAN Review
Here's what teens are saying about Bluford High:
"I love the Bluford series because I can relate to the stories and the characters. They are just like real life. Ever since I read the first one, I've been hooked." --Jolene P.
"I found it very easy to lose myself in these books. They kept my interest from beginning to end and were always realistic. The characters are vivid, and the endings left me in eager anticipation of the next book." --Keziah J.
"Man! These books are amazing!" --Dominique J.
Children's Literature - Annie Laura Smith
Jamee Wills is a freshman at Bluford High and discovers how far other participants at cheerleading practice can go in bullying a shy new girl, Angel McCallister. When Jamee tries to stop the insults, she also becomes the target of the other girls' bullying. How can she stop these attacks against both her and Angel? This novel is a lesson about intervening when someone is being disrespected and bullied. The story gives insight into the disrespect and bullying that exists in today's schools. Angel asks Jamee a question about the girls who are bullying her: "Why do they hate me so much?" Jamee's answer explains the causes of some bullying quite well: "Probably ‘cause you remind them they ain't as special as they think they are." This novel also provides a view into sibling rivalry as Jamee lives in the shadow of her successful older sister, Darcy. The novel is volume 18 of the "Bluford High Series." All of the books in this series address current issues facing today's teens. Reviewer: Annie Laura Smith
