Kaguri is a wonderful example of one person's using educational success resposibly and with purpose to benefit the lives of those less fortunate. If you've ever doubted your ability to impact the lives of others, read this story and it will change your mind and heart."---Ishmael Beah, author of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier" "Twesigye Jackson Kaguri is a force to be reckoned with. He is a social entreprenur who had a vision and made it a reality. The Price of Stones tells the amazing story of how, with courage and deep faith, he has brought the gift of education to children orphaned by AIDS in rural Uganda. I could not put the book down and cried through many parts of it."---Maya Ajmera, founder and president, The Global Fund for Children" "Many Americans feel disconnected from the AIDS pandemic occurring on a continent so far away. Twesigye Jackson Kaguri, in his inspirational book The Price of Stones, shortens that distance, making the effects of this disease personal by giving names and faces to AIDS orphans. But more significant, many of Uganda's discarded children have been given hope and, even more important, love as students at the Nyaka AIDS Orphans School. Twesigye Jackson's life illustrates beautifully that one person can make a difference."---Ron Hall, coauthor of Same Kind of Different as Me" "By page 23, I was hooked, By page 33, I had tears in my eyes, the first of many times as I read this impassioned account of one man's humble yet courageous efforts in confronting the grim legacy of the ruthless serial killer, AIDS, in his Ugandan village. If The Price of Stones doesn't break your heart over the plight of AIDS orphans in Africa, see a cardiologist immediately. You may need a transplant."---Lynn Vincent, New York Times bestselling writer of Same Kind of Different as Me and Going Rogue: An American Life.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
So many people die of AIDS in Uganda that at times bodies are stacked in city mortuaries like firewood. Moved by the plight of more than one million AIDS orphans in a nation with a population of 30 million, Kaguri, a human rights advocate returning home after studying at Columbia University, decided to build a school for children who had lost one or both parents to the syndrome. Kaguri and his American wife used their modest resources and contributions from friends and churches to open the two-classroom Nyaka AIDS Orphans School and initiate advocacy campaigns to counteract the superstitions that have stigmatized HIV/AIDS in Uganda. Anecdotes about the students, the author’s family—his own brother and sister died from the disease—and his dealings with donors and corrupt officials, reveal Kaguri to be at once vulnerable and ferociously determined. Written in simple, straightforward style, the book is an affecting and accessible tribute to the difference one person can make in the world. (Jun.)
Kirkus Reviews
A chronicle of the humanitarian efforts by a Ugandan native schooled in the West, addressing poverty and the ravages of AIDS in Africa. Kaguri, now a university administrator at Michigan State University, was one of the lucky ones growing up in the impoverished rural village of Nyakagyezi, where his father owned a banana plantation. By 1991, while the author was pursuing his studies in Kampala and planning to attend Columbia University, 15 percent of Ugandan adults suffered from AIDS (known in the country as "slim"), as well as nearly 30 percent of pregnant women in cities, which left small children like many of his own relatives without parents. When Kaguri brought his American bride to his village in 2001, the two decided it was time to help some of the two million orphans by starting a primary school where they would receive a free education, books, uniforms, meals and health care. While his father, Taata, refused to offer land or help (he believed Kaguri was a "disobedient son"), he eventually became one of the school's most enthusiastic supporters. With money donated by American church groups and grants, the Nyaka AIDS Orphans School opened Jan. 2, 2003, with its first 67 students. Much of the book focuses on the struggle to find sustainable funding for the school, and meetings and interviews are drawn out for dramatic effect. The author alternates the main narrative with flashbacks of his youth, providing a snapshot of the daily lives of the Ugandan villagers. Poignant moments include interviews between Kaguri, the school director and young students overwhelmed at the chance to be freed of the drudgery of daily chores and attend school, and heartbreaking scenes in which students dieof AIDS. A slowly unfolding, moving journey of turning beliefs into actions. Tie-in to author's lecture schedule. Agent: Caitlin Blasdell/Liza Dawson Associates

How a small group defied the odds to create a school for AIDS orphans in their village

This is an inspiring tale of how a small group of people, against great odds, brought education and hope to the lives of AIDS orphans in rural Uganda. Intertwined with the story of the school is an account of the author's childhood in the small village of Nyakagyezi.

The book brings home the scale of the devastation wrought by the AIDS pandemic in Africa. It shows the challenges involved in obtaining basic necessities, such as pure water and medical care, in a remote third-world community. Larger social issues aside, the book paints a fascinating picture of life in Uganda and African-style family dynamics.

The Kaguris and their colleagues could see what needed to be done for the many AIDS orphans in their community. The remarkable thing is that they went ahead and did it, undeterred by the difficulty of building a school and sustaining it over the long term. The world would be a much better place if everyone showed this kind of commitment to larger social needs.

The founding of the Nyaka school was a magnificent achievement. I find the stories of the students to be very inspiring as well. With all they have had to endure, these children really seem to value their opportunity to learn. This book should be required reading for every U.S. student who takes his education for granted!

    This person makes a difference!

This is a wonderful book about a person who did not forget where he comes from. Jackson built a school for HIV/AIDS orphans in his village in Uganda. This books introduces you to those who have been affected by HIV/AIDS and who in spite of all the odds live their lives with dignity and appreciation for today. I will never forget the students in Jackson's school or Jackson himself.
