Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
A page of explanation at the start of the book helps the reader understand what is going on right away. Pylades is an 11-year-old boy whose brother, Kinesias, is great athlete. He plans to run in the Olympics and win it. His excitement is ruined when a warning is sent from the gods telling Kinesias to stay home. A life-threatening accident only adds to the concern. Pylades and his brother go to many soothsayers to find the meaning of the signs, but find no answers. They travel to the Oracle of Delphi to talk to the gods and are given the answer, "You must always honor the gods." This perplexed Kinesias, as to honor the god Zeus he would have to go to the games and to honor the god Athene he would have to stay home. I really enjoyed this book as it had all the elements that hold the reader's interest: suspense, adventure, battles, and victory. DK Readers offer five levels of books, from "Learning to read" to "Proficient readers." This particular book is for proficient readers. They include a letter to parents and teachers explaining these levels. The illustrations are great and the choice of vocabulary is excellent. The illustrator very cleverly uses color to define good vs. bad. The glossary is pretty amazing. Across the top of the glossary pages is a timeline. The vocabulary words themselves are explained, accompanied by illustrations and the page number where each word can be found. This would be a great book to hook a child on this particular series.
