Though Herendeen claims she's merely unearthed the “hidden” story from clues already written into the original, what unquestionably occurs in this unlikely redo is erotic, witty and as often silly as refreshing. Here, Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy match wits and sexual appetites while engaging in same-sex relationships, she with older-and-wiser Charlotte, he with younger and pliable Charles Bingley, who struggles with his attraction to Elizabeth's sister, Jane. Sure, the permutations make the already complicated plot even more convoluted, but the sex—hokey as it is with all the pulsing and throbbing—helps ease the prideful misunderstandings and ignorant prejudices. Herendeen is to be commended for her daringly original interpretation of Jane Austen's masterpiece. Its exploration of an alternative sexuality as motivating factor in the behavior of the major characters offers brilliant insights into the psychology behind the beloved classic. However, it is a disappointing performance after her impressive debut, The Brotherhood of Philander. The wittily wicked dialog and sensual imagery have lost their sparkle to a more awkwardly mechanical style that tells rather than shows this complex tale of love's triumph over social conventions. While psychologically more compelling, Herendeen's second novel lacks the wit, humor, and sheer panache of her first book. Ann Herendeen, a native New Yorker and lifelong resident of Brooklyn, received a B.A. in English from Princeton University and an M.L.S. from Pratt Institute. She works as a cataloging librarian specializing in natural history. Ann's first novel, Phyllida and the Brotherhood of Philander, was published in 2008.

    Not what i was prepared for

    I had to give it one star based on my personal tastes, and there was way too much sex for me, especially between fitz and charles!

    Purely Feminine

    Pride and Prejudice is a great novel that is primarily for women. It is basically about the struggle of women to find a good husband due to the period's culture, where women are totally dependent. The main character, Elizabeth is unique, strong, smart, and ahead of her time. She repeatedly refused to be victim of marrying for the sake of family, status, and money. She really believes in marrying for love and has no cares for a man's fortune or who he is in society. The plot is long and sometimes uneventful. The writing is very difficult to follow due to the different language dialect, but after awhile it gets easier. There is a hint of humor that is hard to catch.

    enjoyable erotic rendition

    Following their lust at first sight meeting at a family gala, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy remain attracted to one another though he is expected to marry Caroline Bingley. The pair particularly enjoys their heated debates on a variety of subjects sexual and otherwise.

    Elizabeth finds she looks forward to making love with older Charlotte Lucas. Fitzwilliam relishes his trysts with his future brother-in-law doubled compliant landless Charles, Caroline's brother. He especially enjoys pinning Charles under him when he takes him. Although Charles also enjoys his romps with Fitzwilliam, he fears exposure as he wants Elziabeth's older sister Jane though he assumes he will marry his male lover's sister Georgiana.

    This is an enjoyable erotic over the top of Big Ben retelling of Pride/Prejudice that probably has Jane Austen turning over in her grave. Although the extended relationships are out of control and needing a baseball scorecard to keep track of who's doing who and when, fans who want something radically different in their Austen diet will want to read the other loves of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet.
