Overview

Primal Healing reveals how our mental and physical health are inextricably linked and determined by the brain. For true and lasting change, deep levels of the brain must change physiologically, enabling key structures within the brain to recalibrate to optimal, healthy levels.

For those who have ever sought help for any kind of mental health problem, Primal Healing shows how conventional, word-based psychotherapies such as cognitive, behavioral, and insight, cannot render lasting change, and at best offer only temporary relief from emotional pain. Utilizing compelling case studies, Dr. Janov shows how the brain and nervous system can be imprinted by trauma during birth and early childhood, and how these imprinted memories give rise to all manner of physical and mental dysfunction. When you are able to access these subconscious memories, you can liberate yourself and improve your health.

Dr. Arthur Janov has done more than 30 years of scientific research in neurology and psychotherapy, including studies in neurochemistry, brainwave patterns, vital signs, infrared visions, and immunology.

His 11 books, including the worldwide best-seller The Primal Scream and his recent best-seller The Biology of Love, have been translated into 24 different languages. Janov has served on staff at the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital Psychiatric Department, and is currently director of the Primal Center in Venice, California. His work has also been the subject of a PBS special in the United States and documentaries in Germany, England, France, and Sweden. Janov was recently elected to Claremont Graduate University’s academic hall of fame.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Primal therapy enjoyed a vogue in the United States in the 1970s, when Janov's (director, Primal Ctr., Venice, CA) Primal Scream was a best seller and Beatle John Lennon credited his therapy sessions with the author as the crucial catalyst in unleashing his creativity. However, it was never subjected to clinical studies of its effectiveness (no such studies are listed in Medline for the years 1965-2006), and the current volume is published by a press that specializes in New Age books. Therefore, the first question librarians must ask themselves is whether any current, noncritical book on primal therapy is worthy of purchase. If so, Primal Healing will serve as well as any: written in a popular style, it presents Janov's basic ideas and is illustrated by case histories. Among the questions Janov poses and answers are, "How do feelings evolve?" "What are the three different levels of consciousness?" and "How are memories formed?" Recommended at librarians' discretion. Sarah Boslaugh, BJC HealthCare, St. Louis Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

    cult-like pseudoscience

A dreadful therapy and incorrect theory that ignores research on social influence and false memories. Buyer beware: no proof of efficacy or peer reviewed randomized clinical trials exist.

LIGHT YEARS BEYOND ANY OTHER PSYCHOTHERAPY!

PRIMAL HEALING is a book for people who want to feel better, make smarter choices, and live more satisfying lives. That¿s what Primal Therapy is doing for me, and I¿m sure it can do the same for you and nearly anyone else. I am currently going through Primal Therapy at Dr. Janov¿s Primal Center in Venice, CA. I can honestly say that it is the greatest adventure of my entire life. My only regret is that I didn¿t start the therapy 20 years ago. When I started at the Primal Center, I was taking Vicodin every night for pain in my legs, hips, and back. My anxiety was such that I would cringe with a jolt of fear whenever the phone or doorbell would ring. I was frightened of driving. I was scattered and disorganized. I was depressed, in agony, and filled with hopelessness. I had difficulty reading and could read at most for five or ten minutes at a time. It all seemed like one big chaotic nightmare. After only one month of Primal Therapy, most of the physical pain I suffered was gone. I might add that this pain plagued me my whole life. I¿m not certain when I stopped cringing at the sound of the phone and doorbell. I just noticed one day that I didn¿t do it anymore. Nowadays I¿m simply curious to see who is there. I still don¿t like driving very much, but I¿m no longer afraid to drive. These days I can look around in my office and see that it is in pretty good shape. It used to look like I¿d thrown a hand grenade in here. I feel good almost every day and more often than not, I feel great. My relationship with my wife is many times better than it was before therapy. We now shower together every day. This might not seem like much to you, but we had never showered together in all the years of our marriage. It is now an event we both look forward to each day. We love to wash and pleasure each other. We have become very familiar with each other¿s bodies, which just makes good sense now we are older and more vulnerable to certain diseases. It also makes us closer than we have ever been. I¿m much less scattered now and can read with full focus for hours at a time ¿ and enjoy it. I¿m sure you¿ve guessed by now that I¿m not an unbiased reviewer. Primal Therapy is very dear to me. I¿m livin¿ it, and lovin¿ it. But I¿m not writing this review to promote Primal Therapy. Unfortunately, at this time only a select few can have good Primal Therapy. There are too few therapists 'in part because the training period is so long and rigorous' and too little time. Despite this, the implications of all the research and experience associated with Primal Therapy are not only many and profound they are available for everyone to benefit from. This knowledge could revolutionize obstetrics, child rearing practices, and our education system. The effects of this would be to reduce mental illness, crime, drug use, and a host of other social afflictions. This would in turn revolutionize our prison system and law enforcement policies ¿ not to mention our nation¿s foreign policies. During my life I have experienced a variety of psychotherapies including Client Centered Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Reevaluation Therapy, Tavi Group Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, Feeling Therapy, Eclectic Therapy and even acquired a degree in psychology. With that I can assure you that Primal Therapy is not only the most effective, it is the only therapy that is real science, integrated with neuroscience so that the therapist can clearly evaluate the patient¿s progress. Because of this I can fully trust any of the therapists at the Primal Center because they all know where I stand in the course of my therapy. I¿m sure the day is not far off, whenever you hear the word psychotherapy you will know they are referring to Primal Therapy. I have read all of Dr. Janov¿s books, including GRAND DELUSIONS, the one he has made available on his website. Each of his books represents a step forward in his group¿s research of the theories and techniques of Primal Therapy. However, hi

Primal Healing: Access the Incredible Power of Feelings to Improve Your Health

Primal Therapy is a very different therapy from all other psychotherapies. This is something a potential reader must understand before embarking reading this book or doing Primal Therapy itself. One, you must understand that it involves RELIVING TRAUMATIC experiences in your past, even those that you thought were not traumatic or negative. Primal Therapy postulates that human beings have left their natural environment hundreds of thousands of years ago (see Primal Man) and that this is why people are neurotic. So it is not just a new therapy, it is also a belief system and perhaps some might call it a ¿religion¿. Primal Therapy works strongly against the generally accepted psychotherapies existent today in that it claims it is the only cure for neurosis and in general all emotional, mental and psychological problems including psychosomatic problems. It doesn¿t believe that the other therapeutic approaches work in fact it indicates they make a person more sick. Primal Therapy requires a very large commitment of time, energy, money that can result in a change of spouses, jobs, location and friends. Arttur Janov believes that people must eventually let go of all the defenses they have built up over the years since childhood and totally commit themselves to the therapy as this is the only way to become real. Experiencing of severe pain, emotional or otherwise, is the GOAL and it is believed that this is the only way a person can overcome their neurosis. As Janov has said himself, there may be times when a person is to upset to go into work. It is a total change in the way a person lives their life with the prime goal of doing Primal Therapy. Most important to understand is that Janov feels that the brain is actually structured to handle pain, that we evolved and our modern brains are structured to handle and repress Primal Pain and this is what his research is about and his therapy is about, that is, the undoing of the way the brain operates now, the returning of the brain structures to not blocking pain, but experiencing pain to allow full fluid access amongs all brain structures. Janov claims that he has done the research completely for this and this is why Primal Healing is his most important books, as it is advertised on his Primal Center website. This of course suggests that Janov is a genius, a messiah, and has made discoveries much more important than Sigmund Freud. Dr. Freud was a psychiatrist and Medical Doctor studying with the most brilliant scientific men of his time. Dr. Janov, not an MD, for the most part has done no original research of his own and uses extensively the work of neuroscientists to ¿prove¿ his conclusions. To totally accept what Dr. Janov is saying and to go into Primal Therapy is a major, major decision on one¿s part and there is no guarantee that the outcome will be as Dr. Janov has indicated. That is, at a minimum, he believes that one has to totally let themselves go and completely face their past until they have felt a vast majority of their pain in order to be ¿cured.¿ This means giving up those protective mechanisms that saved them from mental and perhaps physical death in childhood (according to Prima Theory). One has ponder carefully the implications of giving up defenses that save them from insanity in childhood, a very tall order to evaluate. In summary, doing Primal Therapy is a total commitment and total belief of all of Janov¿s theories which almost borders on being cult-like. Realize also that Janov strictly believes that he is the only one who can correctly perform Primal Therapy. Also and more importantly and revealingly there is absolutely no information in his books about his exact success rate in terms of specific types of problems and successful cures. There are no statistics of this type. He leads you to believe he can cure anything and anyone and criticizes people for asking for this information.

Primal Healing: Access the Incredible Power of Feelings to Improve Your Health

I have read Primal Healing and most of the other books written by Arthur Janov and some of the other reviews and articles on his website and there is only one thing missing that could support all his claims of curing nearly every mental affliction known to mankind: actual patients and ex-patients who come forward and talk about their theraputic experiences and how they were cured. Think about it-for those people interested in Primal Therapy have you ever MET anyone who did Primal Therapy? Have you ever gone to a lecture or presentation by someone who did Primal and talked in glowing tones about its effectiveness? Probably if not almost definitely not. In fact Dr. Janov in some of his previous books has stated that the Post Primal patient finds it hard to get along with other people in the world after therapy. Maybe this explains why you never meet one. Is this what a psychotherapy is supposed to do, produce post patients who don't like or want to associate with people who haven't done therapy. Is this the person who Dr. Janov glows about being honest, sincere, a brand new wonderfull person, Primal Man, on planet earth?

Arthur Janov continues to advance psychology

First, a disclaimer -- I have NOT been through Primal therapy. ----- For years, Arthur Janov has courted the scorn of (many of) his fellow psychologists -- but every one of his 'impossible' assertions have been proven correct. Janov's first contribution was to replace Freud's Libido Theory with a comprehensive scientific description of how *pain*, not sexual repression, is the culprit in mental illness. His work has always been done on the foundation of scientific evidence, and his track record has been quite impressive. ----- There's a self-proclaimed guardian of the public who has littered every on-line book forum s/he could find with anti-Janov propaganda, conveniently forgetting that a number of scientists have verified most of Janov's work, even when they have been publically hostile to him. The most direct way to evaluate Primal psychotherapy is to check those who have gone through it. You'll find an unusually high rate of successful treatment and LOW rate of relapse and suicide among Janov's patients. It is far more effective (and safe) than Cognitive Therapy, a.k.a. The One True Psychotherapy ('One therapy to find them all, one therapy to BIND them all'). ----- People in Primal therapy don't go crazy. They don't claim satanic brainwashing or abduction by UFOs. They don't make outlandish legal claims on the basis of fantasies. Some people do suffer horrific childhood traumas, but most people are injured by the factory-like nature of modern obstetrics and the simple foibles of their neurotic, but loving, parents. ----- And almost all of them *do* get well. A few, obviously, don't, and for many reasons -- as with any form of therapy. The road to effective treatment has been long and stretches onward, but it *doesn't* mean that Arthur Janov is a reprobate. Quite the opposite! Despite the hand-waving criticisms of the 'skeptic' crowd, Janov's work has withstood scientific scrutiny for nearly forty years. ----- *Primal Healing* continues the record of Arthur Janov's work and contributions, and will be appreciated by a wide audience.
