Overview

Primary Care Management takes you into the practice of primary care medicine. In 15 carefully wrought cases, author Goutham Rao explores a wide variety of patients and their problems, from involuntary weight loss and Type II diabetes to infantile diarrhea, early HIV infection, and acute lower back pain. The cases are presented through a process of gradual disclosure, each narrative section followed by thought-provoking questions and discussions of the latest relevant research findings. These are not quick overviews but in-depth studies of the kinds of problems encountered every day in a primary care setting. Primary Care Management is ideal as an introductory text for introductory care management and clerkship students or as a review for residents and practitioners.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Sumina Fukami
This workbook consists of 15 case-based exercises presented through a process of gradual disclosure, each narrative section followed by thought-provoking questions and discussions. It is specifically designed to be used in the setting of small-group discussions of trainees led by a discussion leader to develop knowledge and decision-making skills in commonly encountered problems in primary care medicine. It can also be used for individual study as well. The primary target audience is family medicine trainees. Other groups who will also benefit from this book include trainees in other areas of primary care, physicians and educators involved in the development of evaluative resources such as oral and written examinations, and senior medical students. This workbook covers a wide variety of patients and their problems, from involuntary weight loss and type 2 diabetes to infantile diarrhea, early HIV infection, and acute lower back pain. Each case study has specific learning objectives and consists of a profile of the patient, including his or her social history and past personal and family medical history. The problem is divided into several parts, each describing a new development in the patient's illness. Each part of the problem is accompanied by questions and followed by suggested responses. Suggested responses are founded on the latest evidence-based practice guidelines, consensus statement, and research studies. Whenever possible, the viewpoint of several different organizations is presented. This is an excellent book to be used either by an individual or group. The cases are not quick overviews but in-depth studies of the kinds of problems encountered every day in a primary caresetting. The emphasis of this workbook is on the management rather than the diagnosis of particular problems.
